Splitting a yeast starter

I have a half gallon of starter going for sunday and was wondering if I can save a little,maybe like a quarter of it or so, and boil some more malt and water and use it in another batch a few days later?If so, how many days do I have before I use it?

I save mine everytime. you should make a new starter every 6 months or so to keep it healthy, but it can really go for quite some time if you get lazy.
