The word on the streets, is that using the 6 gallon pails for brewing doesn't get a 100% air tight seal. Would ducktaping the lid on have any benefits? Maybe it would seal it just a little better and produce more bubble activity in the airlock?

Anyone ever try?

Snapper, I did try it! Not exactly, but really close. I had a wheat beer (my first) in a pail that the lid didn't fit on tight, I went the duct tap route. I never did get any action from the airlock. The beer has been bottled for just over 2 weeks and taste O.K...being my first batch I don't have much to compare to...good luck

The airtight fit isn't really necessary at that stage. CO2 production basically pushes O2 out so all is well. Duct Tape may very well work but I would consider it redundant.

Agreed. There is more positive pressure at that stage.

I have used plastic pails for over 100 batches with no glitches.
You can replace that black, gasket that's in the lid if you are paronoid. Usually, by that time, it's time toget a new pail, anyhow.
