Hi guys,
I have been reading this forum for quite some time now. Many of my questions have been answered by search or by just following threads.
I still have some questions...will be posted in the appropriate forums though :-)
I just wish I had found this place sooner!

any way, to complete the introduction, I live in stockholm, sweden. We are fortunate enough to get Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and the Anchor brewery products ovee here. Personally I favor the cascade taste as long as it is mixed with something else. I usually do not correct peoples spelling - mostly because my own is a disaster, eheh...

would it look good if a swede commented on the spelling? Would it -)
fretlessman71
02-05-2005, 07:46 PM
Hey - the truth hurts sometimes... they can take it!
Besides, I'M a Swede, too (well, 1/4 anyway)... so they're used to it. :)

I'm 1/2 Norweigan. But It gets over ruled by my English half. I guess that is why I'm so skewed to cask ales. Welcome Brew-T. I've had several Swedish beers over the years. What is the beer scene like over there and what are the best Swedish beers, if any?

"No, I'm actually Norwegian."
"You're kidding! I thought the spelling was a dead giveaway where you were from!"
Well, it's supposed to be, but my great-grandfather lived right on the Swedish border (but still in Norway) over 100 years ago, and when the King of Norway decided to place a tax on alcohol, my great-grandfather changed the spelling of his name in protest."

Wow, youŽve got to respect that! That is....beautiful :-)
The beer scene over here is definitely improving. For a couple of decades the big breweries has ruled the market with their tasteless "beer". But with Sweden becoming a part of EU they had to let up on the rules. And now we have micro breweries popping up all over the place. And some of them are very good.
The home brewer community is still small but growing. What I am missing at the moment is a good beer forum in swedish. Luckily there are places like BYO and Realbeer. I am really glad I found this place. You have answered a lot of my questions.
By the way, I saw this beerbottle a while ago - Mississippi Mud. Are you familliar with it? Is it still around and is it any good? I would buy it for the bottle alone :-).
I will be going over to New York to do some work with a customer in a couple of weeks. I am planning to sample as many of the beers mentioned in this forum as I possibly can...and suffer the consequenses afterwards :-)
cheers,
Tom

Miss. Mud isn't the worst beer I've ever had, but yeah - the bottle is the best part if you ask me.
Tom, sounds like (looks like?) your comprehension of the English language is more than strong enough to get you by until you find the appropriate Swedish beer forum!

Yes, I get by as long as it is in writing...and I know IŽll be corrected promptly in a firm way if my spelling get too bad. And I appreciate that!
But you should hear me talk. Remember the Swedish Chef in the muppets show? hehe

What are some of the Swedish beers? Pripps? I can not remember some of the others.
brew-T
02-07-2005, 10:28 AM
Yes, Pripps is ok. They do the Carnegie Porter - a favorite of mine that also ages very well. Other than that we have Spendrups, Abro and Kopparberg. And our neighbor Denmarks bigger breweries Carlsberg and Tuborg are well established in Sweden as well. I guess they would all compare well with Millers and Budweiser. The majoritys choice maybe, but not my cup of tea...eh, glass of beer.
Some of the better micros are: Jamtlands Bryggeri, Nynashamns Angbryggeri, Nils Oscar and Slottskallans Bryggeri. A quick google on any of them will produce url:s to sites like beeradvocate and such.
I know that some of them export their beer to UK. IŽll do some research and see if any of them make it all the way to the States. If so IŽll pass on the information. Any day you get to try a new beer is a good day :-)

I have no idea. It is probably easier from your side than from here. There is a ridiculous amount of import laws when it comes to alcohol in Sweden.
But I do have a buddy working at the customs - IŽll ask.

The D. Carnegie is in my stable of porters just waiting to be tried out over the next 2 months or so. Hey - do you know what they mean by a "stark porter"?
SoxyinMO
02-07-2005, 05:25 PM
Ah Tuborg Dark... I remember it well.
brew-T
02-07-2005, 05:49 PM
Stark means strong in swedish. There is the Carnegie Stark Porter at 5.5 ABV and the regular at 3.5 ABV. Stark Porter can be lagered up to 10 years with amazing results. The other one will hold for a year or two.
I do have a clone recipe that we are going to brew next weekend. Give me a day or two and IŽll convert it to cups and ounces and whatnot and post it in the recipe section.

I'm pretty sure the stark porter on my list is of the 2001 variety - can't remember right off hand. But I know I can't wait to get to it in the list! :)

I bought six Carnegie Porter last year and six this year - put them in an buddies cellar ( I trust him :-) ). I plan on doing that every year from now on. In a couple of more years IŽll be able to do a vertical tasting every christmas :-)

...what bothers me though is that I canŽt seem to get my hands on anything else than the current years production of Carnegie...

if you are referring to your "porter indie 500" I am restless to see the results. If you are talking about my trip - whoŽs your mole?
fretlessman71
02-19-2005, 02:47 PM
No mole - 2000 miles is kinda far for me to be travelling blithely, and I'm sure you'll tell us all when you get back. This is going to be more like "American Porter Idol" where I get to be Simon, Paula, Randy, Kenny, Gene, and any of the other fools they have as judges on that show - all at the same time! :D

You better believe it. But then again, money rules right? They have a good idea - why not go global? So, IŽm looking down in a Grimbergen Optimo Bruno and i do not care at all. Good friends and good beer will keep your mind healthy!!!

Well, time will cure the first. We'll try to help you cure the second. Of BMC domestic, not the great craft brews!
Hey guys, thanks for the welcome. I start off on your good side by saying I have imbibed in many good beers and my favorite would be Hacker-Pschorr(sp?) Octoberfest although I also like RedHook and Amberbock(if yall think thats any good. I do drink alot of beer so I stick to domestic during the week to keep cost down. When im relaxing on weekends watching sports ill splurge a little. I havent looked around enough to tell but whats the general concensus on Heinekin? Ive met a few "beer snobs" who swear by it but I think it tatse like rat piss(not that I would know what rat piss tastes like.)Any how later.
HogieWan
04-26-2005, 06:52 PM
Heinekin's distinctive flavor comes from the fact that light easily gets through the green glass, and hop oils get changed into something that is the same, chemically, as a skunks apray. I've had the pleasure to find one that hadn't been skunked and found it quite tasty, but I generally stay away from it.
zoom6zoom
04-27-2005, 03:17 PM
The only thing I drink in green bottles is Pilsner-Urquell, and then only when I can buy it in unbroken 12er's so that it's been protected from the light.
