Some sort of homebrew competition between professional brewers at the Manyunk Brewpub. Looks like a pretty neat idea, with some good food of lots of (hopefully) good beer!

Well, the reason i found the aforementioned event was because i was planning a weekend trip to the Manayunk brewpub. after spending a rather crummy friday night there, i thought i'd vent to the community.

first of all, $5 cover to get in. not typical for a brewpub, but hey, they had a live band playing. Turns out the band was just a crappy pop rock cover band, so $5 down the drain!

second, they wouldn't let my buddy wear his baseball cap. scared of gang violence perhaps?? They wouldn't even let him bring it in. he had to hide it behind a trashcan by the entrace and hope it was still there when he came back, which, luckily it was.

third, lots of mass market crap there!!! Corona was the "special" for god's sake! lots of younger folks there just slamming them down and grinding on each other (i.e., "dancing"). I guess thats the scene in Manayunk, but I was hoping for a little beer snob-induced refuge from that.

fourth, the beer pretty much sucked. I started the night with a porter that i could hardly taste. A slight dry roasted flavor, but other than that, it may have been a black spudweiser, no body at all! Followed it up with a couple (oktoberfest style?) lagers that were better. But judging by the extreme headache that all of us suffered the next day all day long, there were likely some sugary additives thrown in there. By the end of the night i'd had 5-6 pints (which is enough for me to sometimes feel hungover the next day), but the headache was really beyond what 6 pints could justify.

so, i'm just expressing some frustration at this mass market brewpub. they seem to run the place like a mini-AB -- all about the bottom line in $$, not making good craft beer.

thanks for listening and have a nice day! :)

That's a shame to hear. I was there about 4 years ago and it was a pretty decent place. The brewmaster at my local brewpub was the assistant at Manayunk before landing this gig. I think that was a couple of brewmasters ago for Manayunk, though.
