Some friends and I will probably be traveling to Indy in late April. Is there anything fun* (*read beer related) to do whilst we are in Indy? Breweries and the like?

Broadripple brewpub is a must.

There's always Rock Bottom, Ram, and Alcatraz, but I've not been to any of those.

I'll be visiting Greenwood's Oaken Barrel this weekend, it's a south suburb of the city, easy drive if you have a car. I'll let you know my impressions when I return.

I'll also be checking out some of those chain breweries in two weeks.

Oh yeah, and depending on your route of travel, three floyds in Munster might be on your way.

They're only open thursday, and friday nights, and saturday afternoons. Definatley worth the stop.

Bruno listed the brewpubs, and I'll add another place: you might want to check out Chalkie's as well. My wife and I spent New Year's Eve in Indy and we wound up hanging out at Chalkie's - it's a beer bar/restaurant/pool hall (not in any particular order) on the North side of town (near where I-69 hits I-465). It had about 15 *eclectic* taps, and I remember having some Mad Anthony Snowplow, Wittekerke, Winterhook, and a few others. Good food, smoke-free, good times.

The only brewpub we had time to visit was Alcatraz. My wife liked it more than I did - it's definitely got that "chain" feel; the food and service were decent.

Indy is a great city.

Go to this site: www.indianabeer.com
It enlightened me about Bloomington.

if you like baseball the Indians might be playing... they have a really nice field and i think they serve some local beers too... but it's been a few years since i've been there.

Alcatraz is a brewpub downtown, but i haven't been there either.

Have I been anywhere lately? sheesh?!

I'd like to head out to Chicago some time and I guess I'll have to drive because I'd have to visit Three Floyds. How far is FFF from the windy city anyway?

Ditto on the Indianabeer.com. But I recommend Shallos on the Southside like 100 on Tap 400 in bottles, Chumleys in Broadripple is nice also while in Broad Ripple visit Broad Ripple Brew Pub nice little Pub. Also Three Floyds is actually about 30-45 from Chicago. A nice little trip I did a couple weeks ago is go to Three Floyds then head to Flossmor Station Brewing Co (in Homewood, IL). It was definitely a nice little trip.

Welcome to the board. I'm headed that way in a week or so. Is Three Floyds open all the time? Can you purchase beer directly from them?

Wow, another South Bend member!

Chaz, 3F is only open on thursday and friday evenings, and saturday afternoons. Fill me in on the details of your trip, i.e. if you have time to drink a pint!

Yep I'm planning on getting all the way to Chi Town. I'll get with both of you as we near the time. I'm driving with my wife and son (Spring Break). All I know is I'm planning on leaving Saturday and will stop in Pittsburgh on Sat Night. Church Brew Works. Then Cleveland on Sunday. Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and Great Lakes. After that I have not yet figured it out. But we are headed to Chicago and have to be home on the 2nd. I'd like to meet up for sure one night. My wife and son will probably see a movie or something that evening. Also I plan on stocking up on beers while out that way. FFF, Bells, Capital and others. If you guys could point me in the right direction towards the best paint stores. Thanks!

Sounds like a good bet would be meeting at Goose Island Lincoln Park to be in proximity to Sam's. (http://www.samswine.com/beer/index.asp)

Did they ever get into any trouble over that kickback thing?

Oaken barrel brewery is a great brewpub with exceptional beers. They're in the Indianapolis metro area near the airport but their beer is all over town as well. www.oakenbarrel.com :D

Well, they're (Sam's) still open, so I guess that's a good sign for now.

Oaken barrel had some good beer when I visited, I wouldn't call it exceptional, but above average. Well worth a stop.

Maybe I hit them on a good day, everything I tried seemed really good. They also took a bunch of medals at the Indiana state fair last summer. :)
