Just tasted Weyerbacher's Heresy Imperial Stout! I enjoyed it very much. The oak character came through on the finish, which was pleasant with the smokiness.
Given that I have a limited experience with Imperial Stouts, how does this compare to others? Any recommendations on where to go from here?
What did everyone else think of this beer?
Thanks!
James

seeing you are in philly, first thing that comes to mind would be victory's storm king. it's on the hoppy side of impy stouts, but quite tasty. I've never had the Weyerbacher.
If you can get bell's, the expedition stout is very yummy. For imports, I really like the Sam Smith's Imperial Stout, but at 7% it's a different monster than these mega versions. Still, it's chocolate character can't be beat.
other good imperial stouts are old rasputin (north coast brewing) and stone russian imperial stout. the weyerbacher sounds tasty.

The Heresy is actually a bourbon barrel aged version of their Old Heathen Impy stout. It could be a good idea to try it unaged to see how it compares. The OH by itself is nice. I heard that they used different batches of barrels and that some of the Heresy has a much more pronounced bourbon flavor.
Student's rec of Storm King is a good one. McKenzie's in Chadd's Ford also has an Impy called 5 Czars that was brewed with the help of 4 BA.com members. It's getting really good reviews.
If you like barleywines, try Weyerbacher's Insanity. It's a bourbon barrel version of the Blithering Idiot, and it's awesome.

I prefer the Old Heathen - light(er) than many Impy Stouts and better than its brother, Heresy, imo.
For the price, hard to beat Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. And if you dug the barrel-aging effect on the Heresy, try to get a hold of some Magic Hat Thumbsucker RIS - aged in bourbon barrels for 36 months. A bit "hot" but smooooth.
Cheers!
