I'm going to make a black and tan out of my IPA and my sweet-stout-turned-porter here in a few minutes. The IPA is a little on the overcarbonated side, so I opened it and put it in the freezer so it will pour our a little calmer. I'll report back in a few minutes and let you know the results!

Well, I mispoured it and didn't get the floating action, but the beer tastes great! I would have taken pictures if was anything worth looking at....

i don't know if you can do one at home, the imperial stout @ naja's was on nitro. now i've heard talk about it being the gravity instead of the nitro, also a lot of people say its the nitro. im not sure i'll ever know the truth......
but it sure was goooood!
hey stod, i hear they have the younger at the toronado...he he he ;)
go on and give it a whirl....if there's any left????
you will be amazed! they're calling it a triple IPA !

I've succeeded in making Guinness and Harp work; and I think I can make this work if I'm careful enough. It sure tasted good though!
A 3PA? An IIIPA? Too funny - I love it! :D

It's the nitro. If the stout's not nitrogenated, you can't float it. If it is, trickle it slowly over the back of an overturned spoon.

Yeah, I was told it was the nitro. The original one was S. Imp. with 04 Bigfoot. That was tasty also. I just had to try it with the Knumb and I loved it. Very mind altering. Oh, the Younger is fabulous. I know alot of y'all don't care for the 120 but think of the hop aroma at half the alchohol ( it's "only" 11% ). We let it sit for an hour or 2 ( since it came out at 35 degrees ). Verrry tasty.

oooh yhea! it was the bigfoot! damn..looks like i'll have to go back! and your right lhhh , very tasty as it warms. my new favorite beer!!!!

Had to go back last night to make sure what I had was correct. I still think it reminds me of 120 in aroma but the flavor is so much richer. It doesn't have that alchohol bite. Wish it was sold in bottles. Socal?? Huh?? Oh, you mean Knumb/Imp. is all south...aaaah.. Hey we gotta give the north its due.:D

Does anyone make a canned nitro Imp. stout? I've got to try this with a really good barleywine (like Bigfoot, but I'm open to the possibilities....) :D

i still think a 120 minute and a world wide stout would make the best imperial black and tan.
and what is this pliney business?

Pliny the Younger is the big brother to Pliny the Elder which is a double IPA from Russian River Brewing Co. The Pliny the Younger is apparently a triple IPA. I'm not sure of the specifics, but I think its around 11.5% ABV or so. I haven't tried it yet, but I am looking forward to it.

russian river makes a double ipa called pliney the elder, just recently they came out with a triple ipa and are calling it pliney the younger. the elder was a hop monster! huge, with a heavy body. the younger has a lighter body and loads of flavor & aroma . i could just stick my nose in a glass and smell it all day long ,if i could resist not drinking any. yeah, go check it out!

i didn't think the 120 was all that great, i've got one laying down. we'll see what some age does to it (at least three years) im sure it will improve immensely.
as for me well......i'd llike to try an oak aged speedway stout over an oak aged old knumbskull!

I don't know....when Summit came out with their Oatmeal Stout, it was on nitro, and the bartender and I made several attempts to make a black and tan out of with Summit's Pale Ale. Couldn't get the Oatmeal Stout to float over the Pale Ale, despite repeated attempts. ;) (Although the two tasted great together!) I asked the Summit rep about it the Autumn Brew Review and she said that it was the gravity of the beer, although I'm not entirely convinced she know what she was talking about...

Gravity does, indeed, have a lot to do with it. The nitrogen only aids with it. In years past, I tried to do a B&T with my pale ale and stout, but it would never work. The gravities on these beers were very close. Around 12 to 12.5 degrees plato. Last year, I made my stout a bit lower in gravity, I think it was around 10.5 plato or so. Black and Tans worked like a dream.

pliny the younger was very yummy! had it at the toronado, along with an elder for comparison. Both had similar (amazing) hop aromas. The younger had a depth of flavor on both the malt and hop side that made it really complex, but also very drinkable. the elder reminded me a good bit of 90 minute ipa, but the younger was even better.
thanks for the heads up. I had never experienced Russian Rivers' brews, but that definitely ranks up with the best IIPA and IIIPAs I've had.
