Well I may be out of the net for sometime to come. Very much like the storm we had 3 years ago this week, the KC area is about to get shit on and hard. While they are only sayin 1/4" or so an hour it has already started and we are close to 1/2" on the back deck as I type. It is sopposed to be followed by snow that is poredicted to add 1-3" in most of the city and more in the surronding counties (me).
3 years ago with a very similar weather pattern for the previous week and a prediction close to what we have tonight we recieved 6" of ice and then 3-6" in snow overnight. we were without power for several days due to the heavy line damage at substations.
Anyway, I have the emergency blankets and water rations ready to go. Hopefully we will still have power in the morning. Right now the wife has forbidden me to step outside lest I slip and wind up in the hospital again.
There is also no dodging this bullet. They are calling for 100% chance of precip.
Severe Weather Bulletin:
Issued at: 2:50 PM CST 1/4/05, expires at: 7:00 PM CST 1/4/05
Ice storm warning remains in effect until 6 pm cst Wednesday.
The kansas city area is in store for a prolonged period of freezing rain late this afternoon through this evening. Between 3 pm and 7 pm rain rates between a tenth and a quarter of an inch an hour are likely. Temperatures will remain near 30 degrees through 6 pm, so by late this evening a half to three-quarters of an inch of ice may form. Ice accumulations will be most significant on trees, power lines, and other elevated surfaces.
Well traveled roads and streets that have been treated will remain wet through early this evening. The ground will likely remain sufficiently warm to prevent ice formation through early evening, but roads may become icy tonight as temperatures fall into the 20s. Be cautious when driving on bridges and overpasses. They will likely become ice covered more quickly.

It is scary when your town is specifically mentioned on national news. We have about 35K here and are apparently going to bear the brunt of this crappy system.

We just had the ice New Years Day and are expecting 8-10" of snow between now and Thursday; not anything too earth shattering, but our first big storm of the season.
Hope you have some good beer to get you through...

We had a bad winter storm here a couple days before Xmas, getting 10 inches of snow & ice. It all melted by New Year's w/ temps in the 50's & 60's. Now its rained the past 2 days, & is still supposed to rain today & part of tomorrow, averaging 3 inches of rain on top of 10 inches of rapidly melted ice & snow. Flood watches & warnings are everywhere. I'm ok as long as my sump pump doesn't break down!!:(

we're at -2ºF right now, with a -14ºF windchill... looking at all the alerts, this thing is going to miss us completely, we're sitting under a nice clear, dry, high pressure that's keeping this thing south of us...
interestingly, we've received less than 3" of snow so far this year, which is about 10% of what we normally have by now. problem is, with no snow cover, the cold makes the frost go even deeper, so busted water mains and frozen pipes get to be the norm...
brewmonkey

We still have power but everything is encased in a shell of ice. The forecast totals were missed, thankfully, but we are now being told that we might see the southern edge of the storm that is going to dump 10" of snow in Chicago. :D

That's kind of what I was thinking, Bruno. All we've gotten is rain, rain and more rain. (can't say it enough). We live on top of a limestone bluff and I can HEAR the rain perculating through the rock below me; below my house. And I think :"Oh God, I know what causes sinkholes."
But in the end the rain got us. I am home today because our road is flooded. We went through one stream bed this morning (we shouldn't have) and thought it was high because it had become blocked again. Nope. It was high because it is now part of the Gasconade River. 50 feet ahead there was more river over the road, so we turned around. Yikes! It's supposed to crest early this afternoon so MAYBE we'll get out tomorrow. We can usually see the river from only a few spots here at home, and that only a glimpse. If I stand on my porch today I can HEAR it rushing by. Another great reminder of why I'm glad my house is NOT in a flood plane.
Boy am I glad we decided to stop for groceries on our way home last night!

My father in law is in Fulton and he said they got tons of rain too.
In the end we got about 2" of ice and 1" of snow. Not bad but enough to close everything down it seems. Kind of funny though as I grew up in New England where it took at least 7"+ to make them even think about shutting things down.

One thing we DON'T get here in CO is ice storms. It's just not humid enough for it. But there is a 1" layer of ice underneath the 9" of snow in many places here... that's as close as we ever seem to get. Wonder if this'll be melted off by Sunday...

Thats funny, just the slightest hint of ice will close things down here. Its not the actual ice or snow that worries people here, its the fact that no one knows how to drive on it.

I used to live in KC (many moons ago), and I remember there was an ice storm in 86 or 87 that knocked out all the power for a few days. As I was only 8 or 9 at the time, I remember thinking that we would have to live that way forever.

I was actually awakened by the minor quake that centered around Kankakee, IL last summer. My bed was shaking as though a train was rumbling by outside my house -- and there isn't a track within 3 or 4 miles! I remember wondering to myself if it was some tremor, noted the time, and went back to sleep. Sure enough, it was all over the news the next morning - weird.

I'll probably be complaining more about this, but our forecast is for several days of the coldest weather we've had in years. it's going to drop from our current balmy 25ºF throughout tomorrow, and we're looking at not seeing above 0ºF until Monday, with lows in the -20º's... then, add the windchill... ick...
this leads to the winter paradox... when it's cloudy for days on end, and you start to get depressed because you haven't seen the sun... but, the sun comes out, and the temp plummets... you can see the sun, but you can't breathe...

I remember around 1994 (or 5?) it hit somewhere around -30° with strong winds; they claimed the wind chill was in the -90 range. I know you could get frostbite on your ears going out to get the mail if you didn't cover them up well enough.
I had a slightly sloping driveway and a manual transmission truck; when I backed down the driveway and pushed in the clutch, my truck stopped rolling just as sure as if i had hit the brakes...the gear lube was that thick from the cold temperatures.

Yes, since December 21st (the Winter Solstice) the daylight is supposed to be getting longer - but I'm the one who still contends that, no matter what a calendar reads, February has to be the longest month of the year. Something psychological about that month being stuck between the dead of Winter and the first hints of Spring make 28 or 29 days drag on forever - at least in less-than temperate climes.

Thanks, Chaz...this place is becoming my home away from home; I feel like I really know a lot of the people here.
I haven't seen any internet board that has the camaraderie and friendliness of this one.
My home brew quality has improved by magnitudes from the tips I have gotten from reading these pages.
I am looking forward to the "convention" in October; hopefully, nothing comes up to prevent my attending.
...is this where I should thank the academy and my agent??? ;)

It has already started snowing here. (Early Saturday Morning). Good thing i stocked up on bread, TP and milk. Of course I am never low on beer. We're supposed to get somewhere between 6 -10".

I got the snowblower out last night, moved about 6", there's maybe another 2" on the ground since then...

LOL!
I brag about 65F and I get paid in spades. We are in the single digits with wind chill at -10F.

BM, you're enjoying this, and you KNOW it... :D
Seriously, though - there's something mesmerizing about a storm that just drags the entire town to a halt. I used to love to sit by the window and watch the snow pile up. Haven't been able to do that this year, however - the snow's only been falling whenever I've been busy, driving, or sleeping.
Something that don't happen to us very often here on the Lake Huron side of our state, we are getting lake effect snow beause of a northeast wind. I think that happens when we get the wraparound (counterclockwise spin) of a low pressure.

12" so far (at least)...now the wind is kicking up to about 25mph, expected to go higher yet, and the temps are falling...and my snowblower just threw a belt.
Barley wine tonight, boys!!

Hope your phone line or cable line holds out so you'll have someone to tell about the great beer you're drinking tonight! How cold so far?
I keep hoping that CO will get one of these storms just so I can see the look on my wife's face... :D

It is about 10°F now, hopefully it will level out there. Things are looking up: I replaced both snowblower belts and the wind has died down a bit.
It's now dark out, I'm done with snowclearing for the day, and shouldn't have to go back outside again until tomorrow.
So on to beer! I have a bomber of Great Divide Old Ruffian which will sacrifice itself to me tonight...whoa! Just looked at the GD website...this stuff is 10.2% , have to start with something a little smaller or I won't make it past 10:00. The problem is, I don't think I have anything in my fridge below 7% right now...the holidays depleted my stock of session beers; nothing left but the big dogs.

That wind was FIERCE! You all get much more of the bad weather up there in KC than we get down here, and man-oh-man you could have kept that wind.
My husband keeps saying he feels jipped because we haven't had a snow day and I tell him to be careful what he asks for....
Supposed to be 50 today & sunny. Just no more rain for a week or two to dry us out!

Hey I'm glad we got less than predicted. only about 4-5 inches. The wind on Saturday night was howling though and it was frigid. I'm glad it's done. I'm hoping New England gets cleaned up by Wednesday or Thursday because Some of us are heading to Boston and New Haven for beer festivals. :D

I heard a weather forecaster say that we still need moisture here in CO, and that the drought is far from over... what does he think, Colorado is supposed to be a tropical paradise? It snows once or twice a week for 2 months, and we get a stretch of nice weather and he starts worrying. There's NO WAY he grew up here....
