Next Saturday I plan to brew an all grain clone of Sam Adams Summer. A 10 gallon Batch called for 8.5 lbs malted wheat, 11 lbs of Pilsner Malt, 2 lbs flaked wheat. The lhbs only had 4 lbs of Pils left at the time. I substituted Lager Malt for the Pils. What difference will this have on the ale? I can not find much info on Lager malt although it appears to have a light color and flavoring as the pils would. So my bill for the brew looks like:

8.5 malted wheat
11 lb Lager Malt
2 lbs flaked wheat
1 lb carpils

Mash@152 for 90 min
sparge and bring to boil for 15 min

add 1 1/2 oz Hallertau US (4.9aa for 45 min)

add 1 oz grains of paradise and 2 oz shredded lemon zest then boil for 5 minutes

add 1/2 oz of Hallertau us (4.9 aa) at flameout.

cool and pitch cultured wyeast 3944

so whatcha all think?

My bet is that you wind up with a very good beer.

Did you do a visual/smell comparison between the two malts? If so, then you probably already know what the difference will be ;)

Good luck.

I did a very little research (looked in the promash database). not all of the grains had all the numbers filled in. It appears the lager produes a 1.035 SG while the Pils gives 1.037. The lager has a diastatic power of 63 while the pils is 70. This is based on 1 of 4 malts having all data entered in the database, so i actually matched an american lager to a german pils. Could be close, could be way off. I'd ask the store to provide malt data. Failing a good answer there, I'd ask the maltsters. You might want to have some DME on hand to touch up the preboil gravity.
