I've notice the thousands of members who have signed up 4,6,8 and more than 12 months ago who has never ever made one post. It cool to see we have had 5568 sign up members, but it kind of reminds me of a church who bragged about having over 300 members but consistently had attendance of around 50 each Sunday. They had people on their membership roles who had not gone their for over 20 years. The point and suggestion I'm making is maybe this site should delete inactive members if they have not been active for 8 or 12 months.

Just because they are not posting does not mean they do not read the forums.

Additionally, only the site admin has the ability to delete members and that would be quite a task for him.

That thought occurred to me, I may be wrong but I think most found this site, signed up and has long forgotten about it.
It really does not matter. I brought this up I guess because I'm a dot your i's and cross your t's type person. I just happen to get into the members list and noticed the pages and pages of 0 postings.

Pretty much every forum on the web has that and itīs a major task to get them all deleted manually. Thereīs no way in the script to do it automatically.

Hey Jake; there may have been some who've forgotten this site, but a lot of us come often and don't post much. I get quite depressed sometimes when I look at my sign-up date/posting ratio compared to others. But believe me, when I need a beer question answered, this is the first place I come. Quite frankly, I'd feel hurt and angry if I couldn't log on just because (for once) I'm listening more than talking. :(

It seems that there have been several newbies posting lately. I say come one. come all. The more the merrier and all that stuff. We welcome posts from all. I would invite all the lurkers to join in. This is a fun and educational board. We welcome all.

I certainly would not want to hurt anyones feelings. I don't think my feelings would be hurt if I had to rejoin because I had not visited this website for over a year and one day I decide out of the blue to see if that cool beer site is still around. This site knows the last time I visited and gives me an opportunity to see post since my last visit.

I say that these members should not get deleted. Some of them may have signed up and then got shipped over seas for the war or for other reasons. I know that if I got shipped out and when I get back find out that I got booted I'd be a little pissed. Luckily it doesn't look like they will be taking me from my desk job before I'm due to rotate in 2006.

Good point, the don't delete wins this debate.

Hmm.... I WOULD delete all memebers whose only posts include the words "BEER PONG!"

Agreed. Maybe the course of action is to work on people who have posted only a few times, and then only to stir up trouble. OTOH, if it's not taking up any extra space for the server, or just doesn't matter to the smooth operation of the site, what harm?

Hey Jake,

I know how you must feel but be of good cheer! I am sure that many come here to read, research etc. but not necessarily to post. I deal with the suds public everyday and to my surpsrise, many with grand palates are quite shy and do not have much to say unless gently prodded. Perhaps you could send a shout-out to all in an encouraging manner.

Cheers!

SKELETOR - A VERY GOOD POINT! IT PUTS ONE IN MIND OF THE UNSCRUPULOUS EMPLOYERS OF THOSE SHIPPED OUT AND WON'T MATCH THEIR WAGES WHILE SERVING....

Actually, I know one that can be deleted: "goon." I signed up, changed e-mail addresses (disabled the other) and forgot my password. When I asked to have the password re-instated, I couldn't get to the old e-mail address...

Other than THAT username only, I'd say keep the rest for the same reasons stated above!

Cheers!

I really hope my post did not come across as cold and callous, because that was not my intention. I was just thinking about accuracy in member count. But like fret said what does that really matter.

OK, OK, I'll post something for Beers sake. Don't get out to play much anymore but I'll be at the Mid-Winter Brewfest in Milwaukee at the end of the month. I'm also at the Firken pretty often, one of the guru's here hangouts. I thought I was a beergeek till reading this forum so I've been hiding in the shadows.

Well welcome! Hope other lurkers will feel moved to post. I remember Fret posted a request to lurkers last summer asking them to join in. I'd like to see more folks from other countries post as well. It can be helpful and educational.

I wonder if there is some sort of welcome or post that we could put up permanetly that would encourage participation.

Yeah, us moderators could put up a sticky in each of our forums that talk about rules as well. A nice "Welcome to the site! Say the magic word and we'll boot you out." Oops... wrong site... ;)
