Georgie, my friend, you really ought to poke around a little more before you post polls like that... I can see you sticking around if you're willing to learn, and I don't mean to come off as an uppity know it all, but REALLY... the beers listed in your poll are AWFUL. And you don't need to add an attachment of your picture (which is far too fuzzy for anyone to get an idea of what you look like) to every single post - sometimes the mystery is a good thing!

If you're willing to try some new things and learn a little bit about what we do here, fantastic... welcome to the boards. Otherwise, you may be better off with a Yahoo chat room.....

I think you could start your exploration by checking out this thread (http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&postid=62463#post62463). It will give you a pretty good insight into what those around here consider a quaility brew. Most of the members of this board, are for the most part, bonafide beer snobs (myself included and it's not a bad thing). There are several beer's that qualify as stepping-stone beers but it might require leaving the AM/PM behind and hitting a moderate quality grocery.

When I first found this site I wasn't fully assimilated with micro brew. I did do some exploring of the site and discovered what it was all about. At first I got discouraged because I had a hard time finding the beer I heard mention on this site. I really thought I was going to be cursed with having to drink the macro brews. Out of that frustration I started a thread asking members if they had no choice but to drink a macro what would it be? Maybe I thought if I had to drink it I would drink the best of it. Since that time I have found really good micro brews and discovered that if there is a will there is a way to find good beer.

It was $2.99 or so back in the mid 80's and on the campus of KU was the beer of choice as Free State had not opened yet.

OK, I'm not getting my point across here. I've never been to the hockey board, any hockey board. On several occasions, you or another hockey player have mentioned that this board is much nicer than the hockey board, that the people on this board behave much better. I was trying to put forth a subtle hint that maybe people were being a little rough on our newcomer.

I didn't see the "other" option when I first read the post. I assumed it was a "if you had to drink one of these, which would you choose?" kind of a poll. I would drink Michelob if given just these choices. When I go to my parents' house, the choice is Bud Light or Coors light, so it's always a whiskey day when I go home.

P.S. - who voted for Corona?

Please forgive me for being thick, which we goalies are wont to do also.

fretlessman71
01-03-2005, 12:15 PM
Well, if you weren't thick, you wouldn't be a good goalie, now, would you? :)

The current frustration with George comes not from his newbieness, but his 4 posts that don't really have anything to do with what we're talking about (even though it's close). They remind me of the time a local DJ recorded a call they made to the Butterball Turkey Thanksgiving help line and put on a ruse about what to do with this live turkey he had running around his house. Close, but no cigar.

Man, back in culinary school (CIA) (http://www.ciachef.edu) in Poughkeepsie, NY, we used to get Gennesee Cream Ale. 6 bucks for a THIRTY pack.

12 bucks later, I went swimming in the Hudson River...... in January.

I grew up in Chicago too, and I say Hell no! Had enough Old Stale in college to last my lifetime and yours!

A question Chef, what are you cooking? Great food with lots of flavor and character? If so, don't you owe it to yourself to make a better choice than Pacifico? Beer is food too.

The Pacifico addiction came from a trip to Mexico... I drink it when I try to remember happy times... my buddies and I went there for 3 weeks... and had cases upon cases of Pacifico... I love it now.

And when I MAKE beer, it's exactly like my cooking... off-the-wall, creative, and explosive flavors. But when I BUY beer, it's much like when I buy food... sustenance.

As far as the Hyde Park question... heh.. I used to work there. :D The Hyde Park Brewing Company... but everyone on CIA campus used to call it "The BroooooPub"

All the quoted beers are moderate/undrinkable. Surely there is a better list of US beers tol vote for than this?

Just vote for "other". Almost everyone else has.

You will find that the majority who post here are connoiseurs and will often give very worthwhile information about US beers and locations. I myself have been saved from many a "dry" trip through intelligence I have received from this board's members - most recently when I visited Orlando.

Mind you, I am still waiting for some help as regards my next trip - to Barbados.

john.e.white
01-10-2005, 11:22 AM
This is the only brewery that I am aware of in Barbados: http://www.banksbeer.com . Putting, for example, Belgian beer and barbados in gogle does not reveal anything.

fretlessman71
01-10-2005, 12:41 PM
Welcome to the site Mr. White! Richard is indeed correct; the lion's share of members here never would have posted such a poll in the first place, to say nothing of drinking such swill. It is our contention that the poster, who has made 4 posts and since disappeared, is an imposter at best, or a troublemaker at worst.

Richard is also correct, unfortunately, in that nobody here has been able to find a drinkable brew in Barbados. Bank's Beer seems to have the character of a Budweiser, and we all know that's not going to do for our distinguished friend across the pond. Here's what Beer Advocate had to say: http://beeradvocate.com/beer/rate_results/581/7585/

john.e.white

No worries. Keep an eye out for the voting contest in this very forum "Battle Of The Beers" in a few months, and you'll find a much more worthy list. Dogfish Head 90 min. IPA has won the last two years in a row! Now THERE'S a brew to behold! :)

I'm hoping to vote for Gumballhead (The Usurper) this year.

Banks at one time was contract brewed here in the states for Barbados. I think it was brewed at the old Schoengling / Hudepohl / Morelein brewery in Ohio. Anyone know for sure?

I suppose it's worth noting, as newportstorm pointed out to me in another thread, that companies like Budweiser are more about making a profit than making good beer, and that's really not ALL bad; after all, they have countless employees and shareholders counting on them to turn a profit. In turn, Forbes is less concerned with what we like to drink than what we, as a nation, BUY. We're not beer-drinkers, we're beer-drinking consumers. Forbes is, after all, a financial institution and magazine, and the financial might of any of the Big Three Brewers here dwarfs just about all of the micro industry combined. Why would they be concerned with a company that makes such an insignificant dent in the economy? Whether or not they make great beer is not their concern. Maybe that's their drive...

I see now that I check that the originator of this poll, George, has not been back. Is this because he has realised that this board isn't for him or is he simply uninterested in the results of his efforts?

If nothing else it does confirm the feelings and tastes of those who post here - if such confirmation were ever needed!

Ha ha ha very true Sir Richard. Feel lucky though. I am also members of a Steeler board (American football) and a progressive metal music board (elite music though still quite aggressive and loud for some.) This site gets so few trolls that when they come, I actually find it amusing. The other sites I mentioned, battle trolls constantly.
