Getting ready for my up coming hop holiday! Trying to calculate my budget.

Question: what can I expect to pay for one bottle of the best trappist beers (provided i can find them) in a place like De Wildemanns, Cafe Gollem. The Westvleteren 12, Rochefort #8.

With the fall of the dollar against the Euro, this trip is getting more expensive each day. Any suggestion of a"good beer for the money" selection....Thanks

Sorry not to be able to give you an exact figure (I can only remember that they cost less than I was expecting when I was in Belgium), but here's some good advice: in Europe, try to buy beer you're going to keep from shops, not bars/pubs. Contrary (so I understand) to the USA, it's considerably more expensive to buy it at pubs. On the other hand, some beers can only be found in pubs (particulary the rarer ones).

My wife and I were in Amsterdam in May/June of 2004.
Average cost of the beer in the pubs was between 3-5 Euros. Westvleteren 12, however, was impossible to find in the cafes. I did manage to find West' 12 in a beer shop (four years old). They only allowed 2 per visit, unfortunately it was our last day there, and they cost 7.5 Euro. Then, the Euro was 1.37 USD.
As mentioned by"stronk", get the beers in a beer shop, much cheaper..

The rest of the good beers were a-plenty. Don't forget to go to De Bieraards on the Leidesplein and De Zotte. Gollem has about 150 beers to choose from. If they have to get the beer from the "cellar" ask for some cheese that they keep down there. They have some really good cheeses ageing in the cellar

"Brewery 'ij " is really cool to visit. Call for their hours of operation, and try to get there about 1/2 hour earlier. The beers are excellent and inexpensive.

Other good beers I acquired from the shops were Gulden Draak,
Grimbergen (very common), Brugge Tripel, Brugs Blanche....and any other beer you've never heard of, are quite good.....

I'm an american who lives in Brugge, Belgium. Around here a good trappist beer will run about 3-4 Euros in a (tourist) pub. Westvleteren is available at certain pubs for a premium price (or cheaper if you speak dutch well enough). They are available in the supermarkets outside the tourist zones for anywhere from 0.70 E for Westmalle double to 1.35 E for a Rochefort 10. Things are much more expensive in Amsterdam. I don't know about trappist beers, but they are as foriegn in Holland as they are in the U.S.A.
I hope you enjoy your trip and suggest that the next time you come to the source here in Belguim. Good luck finding your beers.

I was at InDewildeman last week and their beers are ranging about 2.50 - 3.50 euros for a 33cl drink. Some are 25cl (usually the extremely strong stuff like Beelzebuth).

We went to Haarlem one day and got a Westmalle white label (9.5%) for 2.70.

If you wander into some tourist traps though you could be paying 6 euros for a pint of crappy lager.

Just to say to eppie that I was in Brugge in the summer of 2003. I am supposed to go back this summer but I don"t know for sure yet. It is a beautiful place. Yeah, got the cheapest beers in the "supermarkets". 3.50 euros for a Kasteel 4 pack. Loved it. I'm sure everything is more expensive for us since the dollar is tanking. The beers at the bars were far more expensive.
