My last two brewing sessions have been very messy because my propane burner (turkey fryer) has deposited a thick layer of soot on the bottom and sides of my brewpot. It has been fine for a year or so. Anyone know why it has suddenly started burning yucky?

Thanks!

Interesting. Mine has done this from day one. I knew it would do it casue the guy I bought it from told me it would. My friends doesnt and they look almost identical. I wonder if it is the diameter of the tube that makes it soot up or not. If so maybe yours just needs to be cleaned.

I think soot comes from incomplete combustion. Check to see if your jets are clogged up, play with the vent, you shouldn't be getting soot (basically carbon...)

Mine did it from day one, and has slowly been getting better as time goes by. I assumed that it was the paint on the burner burning off...but I guess that since others are having the same problem that it's probably the propane..

It's a bitch to clean up!!

Update: I took the propane bottle to the shop and they checked it out and said it was fine. I came home and took my turkey fryer apart and examined all the parts. The cast iron burner had spider web debris in the tube part, not enough to choke it off, but enough to mess up the flow. After I cleaned that out, it works like a charm again.

Good to hear! I was going to suggest a flame arrester. I don't have one or know what it is exactly! haha I think it is a flat cast iron plate that goes on the burner to control the flame and heat. My mom in law said she has one. But I guess you don't need it know and I don't exactly know what I'm talkin about!
