When I pitch my yeast I use:
although i voted for liquid yeast in a starter, i find that i somtimes i just forget to do the starter (which irritates me the next time i brew, since i didn't harvest any of that yeast). when i use a starter my lag time is usually under 12 hours, when i just pitch from the tube it is typically under 48 hours.

sometimes it's hard to convey what a difference the yeast starter can make to your initial fermentation - If you haven't tried it, you should - it's well worth the extra effort.
With the yeast starter my batches usually explode with fermentation in around 6-10 hours, and are much more active for a longer period of time.
Most resources say good yeast activity as soon as possible is the best way to avoid contamination since the yeast can out-compete the bacteria that can be present, thus killing the bacteria before they really have a chance to piss you off.

I now use liquid after a starter. When I used dry I just whacked it in there (stirred up with a lot of air)
I also tried:
Yeast direct from a previous batch, works great.
Yeast cultured from the dregs of a bottle conditioned ale - worked OK some of my friends have had more success with this - and one beer nerd cultured some yeast directly from a pint of Timothy Taylors Landlord (draught) and that turned out great!

looks like (so far) the majority of people use Liquid yeast - pitched after growth in yeast starter -
Hope this info helps the "new brewers" out there - I know for me I had wondered if it was really such a big deal to:
use a liquid yeast
use a yeast starter
...after you make the switch, it's like you turned the lights on for the first time. Fermentation is sooooo much easier.
just fyi to the new guys........
