Is anyone aware of an outstanding Amber Ale I could try?

Full Sail makes a good amber. Arrogant Bastard is amber in color and is very good. Bridgeport Brewing makes what they call a "copper ale". This one is called Pin Tail Ale. Very, bery good beer.

I'll second the Full Sail Amber. It's relatively cheap especially compared to the Arrogant Bastard...mmmm....I do love the Arrogant Bastard... but I can't afford to stock my fridge with it.

of the two

Full Sail
Arrogant Bastard

which would you say is less hoppy - less bitter?

And, although this is going to sound like a silly question considering it's called "Amber Ale" - can you describe the color of each?

Ok, S.F.B., help me out here. I'd say that Full Sail is a dark (maybe almost a garnet) colored amber. Where Arrogant Bastard has a little more of a gold tint, not a golden color, but a lighter(gold) color than the Full Sail.
The Arrogant Bastard is FULL ON HOPS! I love it, others don't care for it.
The Full Sail has what I would call a smoother, mellower flavor. Nowhere near as aggresive as the Arrogant Bastard.
I'd pick the Arrogant Bastard over the Full Sail (forgive me people in Hood River). The Full Sail is only $6 a 6pack, compared to about $4.50 for a 22oz Arrogant Bastard. Makes a big difference at my house.

You're dead on with those descriptions. Arrogant Bastard is in your face! Hops, hops and, oh yeah, hops. Full Sail is very subtle. Not hoppy at all.

For the budget, Full Sail works best. I go for the "Bastard" first if I have the extra scratch at the time. Remember, also, for the budget the Pin Tail is really tasty. I can't give you a full break down of it because I don't do descriptions all that well.
