I think the Community Brew link got a little buzzed and got off of the subject!!! (lol) Are a bunch of us going to do a beer together or what? We need your leadership Tweek! Help us back on the path to rightousness. We will brew a batch amoungst us! WE WILL!
( I am sober by the way)
Let's try and get this thing organized and get going on it. It's summer time you know!

ok lets find out how many people we truely have that are interested. I myself have a small window of opportunity for this. If I dont brew it in the next couple weeks it is not going to happen for weeks after that.
I think that everyone pretty much agreed that we should pick like one or two people to trade with instead of shipping all the way around.
Lets have everyone post in this thread if they are interested or not. For some reason I am not seeing the thread that talked about which style everyone wanted. it is probabally right in front of me.
Things are getting kinda hectic for me atm, I am going to brew a batch for that C02 project this weekend and after that my time is pretty tight until 2 months from now. So we can see if we can get it together b4 then. Or I can just help facilitate and sit this one out, or we can put it off a couple months.
count me in. the only caveat for me is that unless i get a job soon (oh PLEEEEEAAAAASE someone offer me a job!) my trading partners would have to be local (i'm pinching pennies 'til they bleed...then putting them in an olive press). local would be denver-metro area.

I'm in...Austin, TX area would be better but I'm willing to ship a few bottles.

I'm in the southwest corner of Arkansas, 10 minutes to Texas, Oklahoma, or Louisiana... but I'll trade a couple of beers with anyone.
I agree we need to pick a brew soon...and one that may not take too long to age?
Tweek, it looks like you may be the one to mastermind the logistics on this...OK?
Let me know what kind and I will start the grains ta steeping.
:D
Everyone have a good Memorial Weekend...seeya!

I think I can do this if I get some folks out my way to trade with (Portland, OR.). There may be a cool twist. I will be traveling to Denver this July. If we can work it out, b3s, we may be able to pull off a long distance exchange in person.
Was it decided if we brew a specific recipe or same style with our own recipe? What style was deciced on? Or, maybe I could just search and find the thread.:D

looks like porter had the most votes (from the previous thread) -
I could try a porter - I'm in the midwest (KC Area) so I'm in if someone wants to trade around here.
I'm in for the extract version of the community brew. Just let me know.

For my own piece of mind I would like to trade in person just to make sure I am not sending alcohol to a minor or something stupid like that. It looks like we can hook that up for most of us. For those who will not be able to trade in person lets all put our heads together to think of a solution.
-keep the signups coming the more people we have the easier it will be to facilitate trading.
SFB- I am contemplating a trip up top the Willamette valley in a couple of months. Are you anywhere near there? If so we should hook up and have a pint or two.

not sure if we should all try to follow one recipe (but don't really care) - I'm up for deciding on a portal style and going for it however each brewer goes about his/her brewing.
I think brewmonkey is in my region - any word from him?

Portland is in the north Willamette Valley. How far up are you coming?

Not sure at this moment. I know for sure I want to go to Argyle and Rex hill which is right there in Dundee. Usually when we head up there we just pile in the car and go with no real agenda. How far north (time wise) of dundee is portland?

I like the idea of selecting our own recipes, in the same style of course, and going for it.

Fine
Porter is the style. We will all find our own recipes. If anyone needs a recipe let me know and ill make one for you.
Lets try to brew this within the next 3 weeks. That should give everyone enough time to get ingredients and brew it up.
Keep signing up and we will partner people as we get closer.

Dundee is just about 20 minutes south from me. I am not actually in Portland. I am in Hillsboro. 15 minutes west of PDX. If you are going to be doing wine tasting, check out Sokol Blosser. They have some of the best in Yamhill county.
I will have ingredients and get it brewed next week.

OK,
I have a suggeseion! Here is a recipie that I made that is pretty good. Take a look and see what you think.
Brewer: Fred Flippen Email: iowabrewer@hotmail.com
Beer: Flippen's Brown Sugar Fall Porter Style: Robust Porter
Type: Partial mash Size: 5.5 gallons
Color: 194 HCU
Bitterness: 25 IBU
OG: 1.063 FG: 1.015
Alcohol: 6.2% v/v (4.9% w/w)
Grain: 12 oz. American crystal 60L
1 lb. Dextrine malt (Cara-Pils)
1 lb. American black patent
8 oz. Roasted barley
Mash: 50% efficiency
Mash specialty grains in 1.5 gal. water at 150° for 90 minutes and saprge with 1 gal water at 170°
Boil: 75 minutes SG 1.139 2.5 gallons
3 lb. 3 oz. Amber malt extract
3 lb. Dark dry malt extract
1 lb. Brown sugar
Boil for 15 minutes and then add Cascade and North Brewer hops with 60 minutes left and go as you would regularly.
Hops: 1 oz. Northern Brewer (8.5% AA, 60 min.)
1 oz. Tettnanger (4.5% AA, 60 min.)
1 oz. Cascade (6% AA, 30 min.)
Yeast: That good old White Labs WLP013 London Ale Platnium series. What a good strain! Ferments great!
Carbonation: prime with 5 0z. corn sugar
Let me know what you all think. We can set a date when we decide on a recipie.
Thanks for the great response!
Flip
sounds good, but i've decided to go with a slightly modified honey porter:
8# American 2-row
1# Crystal 20L
.5# American Chocolate
.5# American Black Patent
4 oz. Roasted Barley
2.5# Honey (local CO clover honey)
2t Gypsum @ 60 minutes
1.5 oz. Williamette @ 60 minutes
1 oz. Eroica @ 30 minutes
1 oz. irish moss @ 15 minutes
1 oz. Cascade @ 5 minutes
Have not decided on a yeast, but either Irish Ale (forgot to harvest some last time!) or English dry ale...might even try Burton's ale.
OG: 1.072
FG: 1.010 (knock on formica...been getting some really damn good ferments lately).

:p Probably my favorite beer I brew is porter. I don't have the recipe in front of me to type out. I have been wanting to brew it again.
b3s, are you up for possibly exchanging and drinking a pint or two in July? As I said, I am going to be in Denver and we could do a long distance exchange in person.
absolutely. although my porter may not be ready by then, depending on when in july you're out. local to me is a half-way decent brewpub with cask conditioned ales. decent IPA and wheat...and they just recently started a hoppy pilsner that is quite good.

At this point my stuff is clean and ready to brew - However.....
I'd like to brew my next batch sometime in the next week and a half so, let me know if this is a go and if there is someone in this region (KC Area) I'll be trading with.
Looking for a response on this one..... if it turns out there really isn't anyone for me to trade with (in my region) I will have to bow out and brew up something for summer!
thanks!

Sounds good to me if you can meet me closer to Austin - say maybe San Marcos. If I brew in two weeks (say on the 8th of June), then I can have the beer in bottles by the weekend of the 21st. It'll be up to you to let it bottle condition a bit. If my DD czech pils winds up being good, I'll bring a couple of bottles of that too.

Seemed like there were a lot more people interested before than are actually signing up. Whats up with that?
WE should also start thinking about the logistics of swapping.
here is a way I suggest to make it easy to keep track of.

cut and paste this into a reply with your approximate info, that way everyones info gets dragged into one post.
I would like to figure out if I have someone to swap with before I brew, if not then I am not going to make a porter :)

Yea...I'll be coming down on 35 right thru Austin, so anywhere you wanna meet and swap is OK with me...my porter will be "just in the bottle" at that time also.
Just holler at me when you figure an easy place to do the trade...I'm looking forward to it.

The perfect place to meet would be The Ginger Man on 4th St. Beer taps as far as the eye can see (*drool*)
Let's shoot for around the 21st of June....

well looks like I am going to sit this one out. I need to do my planning today and to be honest I would rather not brew a porter unless there was a reason. I have to many dark beers as it is right now.
I am anxious to find out how it went for those of you who are able to participate, make sure you keep us posted.
SFB. I am not real sure about my oregon trip yet, it will prob end up being a last minute thing if it happens. But if it does happen ill drop you a message and we can hook up for a pint and maybe even do some swapping of whatever we have thats drinking.
Cheers

what ever happened with this community brew---
It sounded like the folks from the west were still going to make it and swap it with each other---have you guys done that yet.
I actually made a porter last friday and racked it tonight.
I was just wondering how the other porters were going.

I brewed also. Since there was no interest in my neck of the woods, I didn't think I would do it. I was going to trade when I went to Denver but that fell through. I am still up to trade. I just don't have anyone here to trade with.
