I am traveling to New York City next month and my sister and I want to go beer hunting. Any suggestions that you might have for beer hunting in Manhatton would be appreciated. I have been over the Brooklyn Brewery before, but no where else. Micheal Jackson suggests the Blind Tiger. Your thoughts?
Thanks for the help and I will report back on what we find.

I was just there 2 weeks ago:
Ginger Man 11 E. 36th St (at Madison) great selection, noisy and crowded. business / professional types. A bit trendy but they had many belgians on tap. Asked for a Chouffe and got a pint of it!! (at 8% ABV)
Blind Tiger 518 Hudson - in Greenwich village - really enjoyed this place. Small, friendly will give you a taste of any of their taps before you buy. Lots of Belgian and English ales on tap
Vol De Nuit -- small friendly Belgian place. Near Washington square. Young crowd. Don't remember the address (probably a good sign)
Others that I have had recommended to me but didn't try (maybe next time):
d.b.a. 41 1st ave. Seem to have a great selection.
Waterfront Ale House in Manhattan or Brooklyn
Mugs in Brooklyn

Of the ones mentioned by Theakston (all are very good), my 3 favorites
are Blind Tiger (least pretentious), Ginger Man (great selection) and
either Waterfront Ale House.
I think that I like BT the best, but I keep ending up in the Ginger Man when
I'm in the city. I think d.b.a. is a little overrated (although I've heard the
New Orleans location kicks butt).
As for brewpubs in NYC, sadly the crop has thinned greatly since the turn
of the century. Out of any of them, I like Heartland, the original Union Square
location, or Chelsea Brewing Co. (Inside the Chelsea Piers complex).
CBC's beers are generally great. And if any of their stouts are on tap,
they are tremendous!
Enjoy!
