its a toss up between DFH 60 & 90 min IPA
fullers 1845 would make the cut
maybe paulaner salvator for something malty
i'd want a good stout/porter... maybe brooklyn black chocolate? (tis the season...)
perhaps chimay cinq for something different.
yikes, that was hard!!

Ommegang Hennipen
some Oatmeal Stout

I feel stupid but is that in reference to it being a malt liqour?
I just saw that a few months ago, after drinkining it for years. I had no idea and now am wondering how to handle this situation.:(

Don't despair - the "malt liquor" tag on the label is only to satisfy certain odd laws around the U.S. that demand any beer over 4.0% ABV be designated malt liquor, not beer.
In other areas, high (so to speak) ABV is defined as "ale." Always funny to see a Paulaner Oktoberfest with ale stamped on the label.
S.
BTW - that's desert, not dessert. ;)

Guinness is a must, IMO. It's not for nothing that it's referred to as the 'liquid lunch'. I had a litre glass of the stuff in Milan about a month ago and didn't need supper! Saves on coconuts...
Tansy
12-23-2004, 08:39 PM
Guinness extra stout
Dogfish Head chicory stout
Dogfish Head Immortale
Old Peculiar
and.....
Young's Chocolate stout
Also, I have a weakness for the occassional lambic, so I'm breaking the rules and listing 6

I'm sure you can do better than young's chocolate stout, from what I've heard. It's good, but not as special as Youngs make out.

Whachu talkin' about Willis....er, Stronk? Young's Double Chocolate Stout is a most excellent brew to imbibe, at any time. As is their Oatmeal Stout, the latter of which would most certainly be on my list of 5. Now I just need to come up with four more!

Alesmith Speedway Stout
I assume the unlimited supply comes with an unlimited liver??

pilsners
belgians
brown ales
doppelbocks
Bourbon cask anything
This is truly an impossible task...

12-26-2004, 06:45 PM

I would narrow it down to three.
I'll put it this way:

With Neil Young's Decade, Led Zeppelin 4 and Vivadli's Four Seasons.
Brooke Burke
Gwyneth Paltrow
Katharine Hepburn (back in the day)

*this was tougher than I thought it would be... i wanted a really rounded selection... something that would be a top beer to me, each in a different style... but being an IPA freak I found that too difficult. :D ask me again tomorrow... and you might just get a completely different answer.
Victory's Prima Pils
Stone's Ruination IPA
Anderson Valley's Boont Amber
Anchor Porter
Hair of the Dog's Fred

Was at the beach with wife, son, nephew, MIL & FIL. Had early dinner reservations. Had some neighbors over and Watched the ball drop. Was in bed by 1:00. Drank a Guinness Extra Stout with dinner. 15 year old Glen Livet and champagne at Midnight. Was very low key as usual.
I was looking over my small list of the 33 beers I have tried thus far and I guess my choice would be.............drum role................
Bell's Amber Ale
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Pilsner Urquell
Ask this question 6 months from now when I've had a chance to grow my list I'm sure my choices would change. But for now that is my final answer.

LOL! This one deserves a beer.
I belong to the group that might have a different answer on any given day. For this point in time I would go with:
Moosedrool
Anchor Foghorn
Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout
Budvar(Chezvar)
Middle Ages Impaled Ale
Stodbrew
01-02-2005, 07:34 PM
Yep, that's a tough one. But, here goes:
Sierra Nevada Celebration
Guinness Stout
Los Gatos Brewing Pilsner
Seabright Resolution Red
Stoddard's ESB*
*I already miss that beer. It's only been a month and a half, but I miss drinking it on a daily basis.
OOPS you asked for 5, well I guess the other two would be:
Samuel Adams Octoberfest
Frankenmuth Pilsener
eppie
01-03-2005, 03:55 PM
Oh my! Just five,
OK,
1. Karmeliet tripel
2. Orval
without question
3. Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale or Poperings Hommel Bier
probably the second due to good head retention
4. Chimay Blue
need something for desert on a desert island
5. Zywiec or Rodenbach Gran Cru
Gotta get some work done right? That coconut radio won't build itself.
Guinnes has a special place in my heart, but is not for a desert island. By the way, if this island exsists, sign me up for the next expedition.

as Chaz said, as of this fleeting moment in time:
a Belgian pale---Val-Dieu, as of now I think, though my education is woefully inadequate
an english bitter or ESB---leaning towards Pride of Romsey right this minute
an American Pale---Two Heart still my fave but if I spent more time in Virginia it might be something from Dominion
something stronger---tossup between Celebrator or something English, let's say Fullers 1845
and whats missing--a german lager--Hacker-Pschorr, but my education is woefully lacking here too....someday there will be a nice dort/export, available only in Germany, in this spot.

I wonder why he's called King Cambrinus, because he's a Duke. Hertog (=Duke) Jan of Brabant, aka Jan Primus. I should know, I'm from Barbant. He insisted that whenever his image was made he should be shown holding a mug of beer. I can tell you still a lot of people from Brabant (both Dutch and Belgian part) share his love for this drink nowadays.
As for my list:

Utrechts Bok
Brand Urtyp

Welcome too Xaos. I'm not sure how these things get started. Is it true he once prayed to keep the roof of a brewery from collapsing under the weight of a huge snow? I think I may have heard this before. The old Narragansett Brewery in Rhode Island could have used him. I believe a portion of it's roof gave way under the weight of a heavy snow.

Well my choices would have to be
Stodbrews ESB (this is Stodbrews, not Stoddards, I dont care what he says)
Stone Arrogant Bastard (thats right wuss!)
Old Rasputin Imperial Stout
SN Celebration
and the one that I could end up regretting, Moose drool. This is because I have only had it once, but it was soo damn good I still crave it.

Thanks please correct my spelling! Because I learned most of my English by watching American/English tv with subtitles, I have a reasonable vocabularity, but it it lacks in correct spelling. Of course we should teach those beer-sceptics a valuable lesson, that beer-drinking is not (just) for brainless idiots, it's an art equal to appreciating good wines or single malts!
Perhaps I should use my dictionary a bit more...
Thanks for the link by the way!

I have a case each of the 94 and 95 in the cellar. :(
I do have an heirloom beer too. A Thomas Hardy 1986 that belongs to my son. I had instructions to drink it with him at age 18. He turned 18 in December. I forgot about this. I actually have TH s going back a long way. My oldest cellared beers besides the Ballantine oak aged brewed in 32 and bottled in 52 are some brews from the 1970s. I still need to do an inventory of my cellar and also a current one of my beer fridge and surrounding area.

Sweetwater Exodus Porter - I am not even a big "porter guy" but I could drink this anytime.
Anchor Liberty Ale - Great hoppy golden ale. Don't even need a glass with this one.
Harp lager - the best macro beer I have ever tried. If I went with all beers that are too complexed, I might get bored drinking them all of the time. Talk about a true "fallback" beer. I never go "wow" when drinking it, but have never grown tired of it.
Sweetwater 420 IPA - THis was almost a tossup with their ESB, but for today this is my choice.
Corsendonk Abbey Ale - I am fairly new to Abbey ales, and have never had any of the ones brewed by those monks or anything, but this is still a fine ale.
Can I get some Cannon Brewpub's root beer too ? It's not really "beer" >:P~

If I could bring anything, it would be brewing equiptment, a couple hop rhizomes and fresh barley. Pretty soon - I could just make whatever I wanted.

Welcome to the board! Not a bad choice - it is, after all, going to be very hot where you are... :)
Have you had Banks much before? A fellow member here had to travel to Barbados, and mentioned Banks, but I can't remember what he thought of it...

I personally think that Bank's beer is wonderful. It is easy drinking in the hot and humid Caribbean but still has good flavor and body.
I have been trying every avenue I can find to get some in the USA but have been unsuccessful. It is available in other parts of the Caribbean; I know I almost wet myself when I saw it on a store shelf in St. Lucia last year. I even hauled a few bottles all the way back to California!
Out of my five choices, Banks probably would be my #1 choice if I were truly going to be stranded on that deserted island...

Banks beer was once contract brewed here in the states. Hudepohl Schoengling brewery I believe.

Well guys (and gals) I have to be completely honest. Maybe I am a bit old fashion, or maybe my taste buds aren't as developed as some of you, but I think that everyone is vastly underestimating Anheuser-Busch products. I can name 5 great beers from them alone.
1. Amber Bock
2. Budweiser
3. Bud Light
4. Michelob
5. Even Busch isn't too bad
Let's all remember that beer is one of the things that makes men...men. Try to remember, beer is Macho, don't make it a sissy beverage (like they did with rum).

You know growin up and wachin the men in the family drinking budwiser and busch , you cant help havin that in your blood. I still drink Busch. Alot of people in my family will not drink the microbrews or imports I drink. I like to keep some busch or bud on hand so freinds and family can have a beer or two with me. They still dont trust my homebrew though.

Leffe! Leffe! Somebody said Leffe!!!!
Sorry, I get excited... That was our "everyday easy-drinking beer" when we lived in the UK. Here, it's quite difficult to find.
Okay, my five are easy:
Triple Karmeliet (the world's most perfect beer, IMO)
Leffe (blonde)
Sierra Nevada PA
Anchor Steam
Hm... A fifth? Not really necessary, with the first four... But I'll go for a Chimay red, just for a bit of the sweet.

Those five are less like a TOP five than an on-going top five contenders, but the answer is easy; top 5 commercial brands:
New Belgian-Blue Paddle Pilsner (most people are nuts for the Fat Tire, which is competant but over rated)
Pacifico Cerveza
Anchor-Liberty Ale
Grand Teton Brewery-Sweet Grass IPA
Bridgeport IPA (I forget who brews it because I can't get it here, there is no justice)
Those are not in any order, depends on mood, but as a rule my mood will typically favor IPA's.

My five:
1. Deschutes Black Butte Porter
2. Guiness Draught
3. Old Rasputen Russian Imperial Stout
4. Chimay Blue Label
5. Pete's Wicked Ale
I guess Miller would be good on an island if you needed bottles to float messages with.

Florida has some issue with importing beer, so I have dubbed it the land of bad beer. That and I have not found any pubs near my house that serve any real variety.
I commute into work for one reason now; Case and keg is near to work so I can find the above mentioned beers.

Let's see...each beer requires both malt and hops, so:
First the malt:
Maris Otter pale ale malt
Cara-pils
English roasted barley
Belgian chocolate malt
Special B
And then the hops:
Hallertaur Hersbrucker
EKG
Saaz
Centennial
Willamette
beerenthusiast
11-20-2006, 01:30 AM
