View Full Version : Serving out of the secondary?

Okay, it's been awhile since i've posted. I was gung-ho on brewing a few months ago, but things have slowed down as i've gotten busy and the weather has gotten colder (and the daylight get shorter).

My most recent batch I tried using a corny as a secondary fermenter, as suggested by several folks on this forum. I cut about an inch of the diptube so as to avoid sediment when transferring from the secondary. It was in the primary (plastic bucket) for about a week so it was fairly clear going into the secondary. I left the corny at room temperature for about a week and then pulled the release to vent pressure -- and there was pretty much nothin', telling me that fermentation had completely finished in the week-long primary (no surprise). I put it in the fridge and it's been there now for a couple of weeks.

On the corny, I cut about an inch of the diptube so as to avoid sediment when transferring from the secondary. My original intention was to transfer it to a clean serving keg and carbonate. However, now I'm wondering whether it's worth cleaning and sanitizing another keg (and hoses) to transfer, and perhaps I should just carbonate and serve in the vessel it's in. The sediment should be fairly minimal, and shouldn't be disturbed if I dont move the keg.

Any thoughts?

that's what I do, secondary is the same as serving... I don't even cut the diptubes, you really only get one cloudy pint, even if you weren't scrupulous in your racking...

Danno - Do you use finings? My first kegging is next week, although I have it in a glass carboy secondary right now. I was thinking for future batches I would do the corny secondary thing.

not post-boil. haven't had any problems, other than drinking the beer before it's aged enough to clear (which isn't really a problem for me... :D )
