View Full Version : Dry hopping in primary?
I just read a beer recipe for an IPA that called for dry hopping in primary. Never heard of this, but I was wondering if anyone had any opinions of this. I wonder if a person really sanitized the hop bag, and marbles (I use marbles to keep everything submerged) would it be possible to get an extra hop boost in the aroma without having to go through a secondary transfer and waiting that out (I'm impatient as hell).
I was also wondering what the effects would be of dry hopping a stout. Has anyone done this? To good effect?

I dry hopped a porter and it was alright. Next time I'll either dry hop tea or dry hop with leaves. I think if you dry hopped a stout, it would be fairly good, though I don't know what kind of hops you'd want your stout to smell like....
As far as dry hopping in the primary, that seems like a waste to me. It seems with all the activity and CO2 being produced in large amounts, that all aroma from those hops will be expelled rather quickly....

well, without knowing much better, i dry hopped my 3rd batch in the primary. Came out great, although I have the same beer in a primary right now and will wait to dry hop in secondary.
But I found no problems. It was a Pale Ale.

Like dropzone pointed out, doing this in primary the CO2 will scrub much of the aroma profile you are looking for.
