Well I am sure that some of you have noticed that I seem to be on line a little bit less then I used to be. This is not my choice as I really love coming here and "hanging" out.

Some of you know that about 1.5 years ago I had surgery to fix spondylolisthesis and ended up having some screws and rods instlled into the L5/S1 vertebrea to increase stability. Surgery went well and I was looking forward to getting back in to the brewing business.

This last August, a full year and change after surgery I noticed pain very similar to what caused the surgery. The docs did an MRI to see if I had done more damage and some x-rays to see if I had broken the hardware.

The good news was that I did not break any equipment and there was no further damage at the L5/S1. Like any good news from a doc there was some not so good news. They found new disc degeneration at the L3 & L4 vertebrea that will someday require very similar surgery to what I had done as well they found what is known as adhesive arachnoiditis.

Arachnoiditis is an inflamation of the arachnoid membrane which is one of the layers of the menengies surrounding the spinal cord and brain. Something has caused it to become inflammed and there is no known cure for this. Basically as the inflammation continues the area affected will grow scar tissue to protect itself. This scar tissue will grow around the nerves and slowly "suffocate" them which leads to loss of feeling in the areas affected by those nerves. For me it is from the waist down.

There is also concern as the scar tissue grows it will displace cerebral spinal fluid cusing massive headaches, which have put me in the hospital twice in the last month and will most likely do so again. Of course I would hope that I do not have to go back. While I am not afraid of needles I try my best to not have to be stuck with them. Especially since the nurse this last time seemed to either be brand new or really bad with an IV. I thought she was going to drive that thing through my hand.

The scar tissue may or may not continue to grow (lets hope it stops!) but if it does continue to grow there is a very good chance that I will become paralyzed from the waist down. The docs say that they cannot predict if or when this might happen. It could be never or it could be next year. The never part sounds really good to me though.

I am no longer able to return to brewing as a profession and I am also unable to work in any position that requires me to sit or stand for to long (about an hour). I also am on pain medications (narcotics) that really prohibit me from doing almost any work as well as driving a car since I am on them about 20 hours out of the day. I am waiting on the word from Social Security but it looks like they are going to rate me 100% disabled. Since the process is still going I am not sure though what they might decide.

Why am I telling you this?

Because I consider this place to be part of my family and I always keep them updated. I did wait some time to say anything as I was waiting to hear from my docs on what they thought.

I guess now that I have my comfy recliner and a new laptop I should really get back on more often. The chair and computer were gifts from my wife as sitting at the workdesk computer hurts I was avoiding it like the plague.

Anyway, that is what has been happening over the last several months. I promise I will keep you all up to date with any changes. Hopefully they will figure something out and cure this stuff.

Ok, enough of the rambling. I have been keeping a blog as well I bought my own domain and server space. I figure if I am going to be lying around all day I might as well brush up on some old skills.

My blog (http://opforsoldier.blogspot.com)

My website (http://opforsoldier.com)

I am waiting for some software I ordered to get here and then I will get the site up to speed. For now I just used a template.

I'm sorry to hear that, Brew. I hope the doc's can come up with something to make everything better, soon. Until then, you'll be in my thoughts. Good luck, my friend.

Wow...tough luck, Brew. My wife is on SS stemming from a combination of injuries, hereditary diseases, and finally a bout of blood clots that wrecked most of the veins in her right leg.

They don't like to make it easy for you, but DO NOT GIVE UP!
It took us several years to get her the benefits, but we stuck to it...they frequently turn you down the first time, even with what sounds like an iron-clad case.
I guess that's how they weed out the frauds, but it is tough on those who need it.

Very best of luck to you.

Thanks to all for the wishes and prayers. It has not been an easy thing to come to grips with as being only 34 I still feel like I am that 18 year old kid. I am reminded daily that it is not the case.

I have been having some luck in the way of social security as accordning to their blue book of qualifying issues, arachnoiditis is one that is listed as only needing verification by one of two methods to be approved. One is surgery the other is MRI. Mine has been confirmed by MRI and I have done everything they need except the final interview. I do believe they still have to get a letter from my doc stating he believes this is something that prevents me from doing my job and then I should be good to go.

This has also given me a whole new perspective on people and disabilities. I hate to admit that I was a less tolerant person then I am now, especially when it came down to people moving slow in the store (but I still hate them if they block the aisle!). I can walk unassisted but it is slow going. I know I get some odd looks and when I tell people I am 100% disabled I get strange looks too.

This has taught me that not everyone who appears to be fine, is. That the guy parking in the handicap spot just might be hurting in a way that we cannot see.

I have been going to the gym and riding the bike if for nothing else to hold on to that last little bit of "I can do this." Since my town has an indoor community pool I will start using it after the New Year (closed for maintenance right now I believe). The doc said that just floating and gently swimming will do some good.

Oh yes, I almost forgot the new subscription to www.gamesnflix.com. A year paid in advance lets you get 8 DVD's/Games at a time. They are one of the few sites that has that many at one time as well as both movies and games. I also broke down and bought Ratchet & Clank Up Your Arsenal. The whole ratchet & clank series is kick ass. With the subscription I am thinking of grabbing an x-box to get some of the games that don't come out for the PS2 like Halo.

Again, I really appreciate the support. I knew that "my family" would be there for me when I really needed them.

Good Luck man, and I look forward to seeing on the boards more often. You always have a good answer to problems I have/will probably run into concerning brewing.

Brewmonkey,

I'm am truely sorry to hear that you won't be returning to brewing. I am extremely grateful, however, that you are part of our "brewing family" and are passing your experience and knowledge along to the rest of us.

I wish you the best, man!

Cheers!

I'm really sorry to hear this Brewmonkey. As a 33-year-old myself, there is nothing between our ages, and what you write makes me feel really lucky.
I'm not a religious person, but I believe that the human spirit allows us to adapt and survive and even thrive in the face of adversity. I know that is far easier to say than to do!
I'm sure that you will triumph and find a fruitful way to utilise your greatest asset; your mind.

It hasn't been a great few months for the forum's members, has it? Everyone seems to be having such crappy luck.

I hope for the best outcome (of course). Good luck, brewmonkey.

Hey Brewmonkey -

Thank you for sharing. Are you as stubborn as I am to keep going?

I must to applaud your maintaining a gym routine. Keep it up...no matter what! Myself, I have a lot of "expensive tape" holding back tendrals of multi-surgical-related scar tissue from protruding into my abdomen, keeping a potentially terminal condition at bay. Im no stranger to the 22, 24, and 26 gauge needle. Im part of the Zipper Club for the rest of my life.

But I still get into that gym and do an ab work out as well as other part of my routine. No matter ho many suguries Im determined to keep whatever strength I have.

Strength in mind and body + stubborness = health to me.

GOOD LUCK brother brewer!

LOL! Yes I am that stubborn. If for no other reason I go to the gym so that I am still in control of some aspect of my well being, proving your equation correct.

I have also been reading a bit more. This has given me time to catch up on a long reading list as well as some new books that have come out. Keeping my mind sharp is part of the whole package to me, especially since one of the side effects of the arachnoiditis is temporary memory loss/problems.

I do have an appointment today to discuss alternative pain management routines. Seems I have developed some type of allergic reaction to hydrocodone and every time I take it I end up itching like a mofo. Never had this problem until the last week or so and at first I thought I might be developing an allergy to almonds but after I stopped eating them the reaction did not stop. It is almost like when they gave me morphine in the hospital and I had a reaction like that.

Funny that this came up, as I was going to say that I know you're just stubborn enough to make yourself better! ;)

You know I'm pulling for you pal, you're a corner-stone around here, wouldn't be the same without you.

Goodluck Brewmonkey, I hope it all goes well for you. Thanks for the tip on McCoy's in the other thread, I'm taking Friday off from work to do some x-mas shopping, and I plan on stopping in there for lunch and tipping a few. I'll let you know how it goes.
