I'm new to this forum and was just wondering if the red theme to this forum is the standard or is it a seasonal thing? The reason I ask, is that I very much enjoy forums and this one is especially interesting, but in a very short time the red really strains my eyes. You might find it interesting to know that I come from a printing background and it is known that red causes the most eye strain. Soft greens are the mostly relaxing to the eyes. Our proofing staff use to have a large piece of green paper hanging on the wall to stare at to relax there eyes when they got strained from proofing so many jobs in a day. After their eyes relaxed they could get back to work and be more accurate.

Just a thought, keep up the good work!

It's been red as long as I've been posting...good point tho. I had heard/read that somewhere about red being hard on the eyes. I wouldn't be opposed to a change in color scheme.

Hmm, there have also been reports on why submarines keep a red glow as lighting in the ready-room because it's easier to see - Audi autos used to have red dashboard lighting for this same reason (they only stopped because no one was ever impressed - though I liked mine). But a change wouldn't be a bad thing...depending on how easy it would be for our administrators.

i would have to agree, the red is a bit old skool. black text on white or light grey truly is still the easiest thing to read. i too wouldn't be opposed to a change, tho i get by ok. despite the aggressive red color we don't get many hotheads in this forum, unlike a lot of others.

I guess if you stared to long at your Audi dashboard you wouldn't be reading for very long. ; )

Hi all,

We'll look at making some changes after the beginning of the year. I won't be posting a poll though - if we try design by committee then we'd be lucky to make the changes before 2006.

Prosit,
Stan Hieronymus

Well, it's a good thing I traded it in then! ;)

And Stan, you're being waaay too optimistic with 2006 by committee!

Military use of red is multi purpose. Because of the wavelength of red light it is harder to pick up at a long distance. Military maps are all made to be red light readable as well because of the above.

I believe that you are being generous with your time estimate.

Thanks Mr.Admin, I think a new look would be great...

I'll buy that, but it doesn't fit the submarine use, except when on the surface, and the main hatch might be open. I'll have to see if I can dig up that info.

SOP.

I have a shot out to some of my sub buddies and as soon as I see my father in law tomorrow I will confirm. He spent 6 or 7 years on subs. Another reason might be night vision, I know that is one of the reasons we had them inside the bradleys, easier to transition from inside to outside without having to readjust.

Here is the word from a buddy who has been on subs

But also for several practical reasons: when at PD (periscope depth), or when preparing to go to PD, the OOD or someone else in control will likely use the periscope, and eyes already adjusted to red lighting adjust more quickly to the scope optics. Also, many instruments and scopes are easier to read in red lighting.

Blue lighting is typically used in other areas, like sonar (at least in fast attack boats where I served), for the same reasons. Other than control, the NAV ET spaces aft of control, sonar, and some engineering stations aft, the rest of the boat generally operates in normal, white light, BTW. Except during movie call on the messdecks, that is.

I don't mind the red at all. But I had an email from Lew Bryson and he told me he might hang here a little more often but the red bothered his eyes.

So, we gonna go with SRM 500 on SRM 0?

:)

I agree. The red wears on your eyes.

These days I can only last about 5-10 minutes online - usually long enough to post once or twice and check my email. Maybe a subtly muted or faded version of the red would be nice - maintain the theme and go easy on the peepers....?

One other reason is that red doesn't destroy your night vision.

All this red light talk got me thinking about the Seinfeld "Kenny Rogers Roasters" episode:

"I'm on no sleep...no sleep! I cant take it in there. Things are creakin' and crackin' and that red light is burning my brain!"

Cheers!

Oddly enough, my eyes are also very shade/color sensitive. I am also new to the site and thus far love it but I must concur that a calmer shade is welcome - thanks for the suggestion! Keep up the great work Realbeer!

I find the red background irritating and difficult to read.

fretlessman71
01-12-2005, 01:59 PM
Funny... the red never bothered my ability to read the words, but my eyes sure hated it in secret. ABout 2 months ago my eyes started having REAL problems, and I'm sure that the red had something to do with it. Problem solved, however... now let's fix that red! Maybe a "heathered" variety would keep the old feel, but improve visual health?

I've decided that when I come to realbeer.com to change the colours on my browser so that I can read a lot more without straining my eyes.
