Bell's in Kalamazoo has this Oberon thing going on. Pretty healthy body. Nice light colored, yeasty, subtle citric sense, tasty brew that'll kick you in the pants, given a chance. Not earthshaking, but a quality brew.

Oberon has to be just about my favorite Summer beer. That may have to do with the fact that my best memory of enjoying it is from a sweltering weekend in Lansing, MI at a friend's wedding - the TGI Friday's in town even had it on tap.
Would I drink it in the dead of a Midwest Winter? Probably not - but it's a great thirst quencher.

Sorry to bring up an old thread. Just got back from 1 1/2 weeks in Michigan. Spent one week on Beaver Island. The only bar in town (Shamrock) had Oberon on tap. Since last week, We have been hooked. They must have Oberon on tap in Heaven!
Crisp, clean, and refreshing. Aside from being somewhat cloudy from the wheat, it rarely resembles a wheat. Just enough spice (coriander?), to let you are drinking a specialty beer. Best served with a slice of orange to accent this flavour. After we left the island, we continued to sample it for the next 3 days down the coast.
My wife & I raised the price of Bell's stock last week.:)

I've got most of a 6er of Oberon in the fridge - you say it goes well with an orange? Gotta try it!
BTW - dredging up old threads are COOL. I love trips down memory lane - and besides, isn't it always better to post in an existing thread than to start a new one? :)

Bleah! Drink it straight, if it were meant to have an orange, the brewmaster would have brewed it with one. I think the whole orange concept started with Bloo Mune/Boors saying it should be consumed that way - yeah, to mask its lack of true Wit character.

Actually, New Belgium recommends an orange with the Sunshine wheat - it is, after all, brewed with orange peel as well as coriander, and I'd be inclined to believe that they know what they're talking about. So the whole fruit with beer thing isn't as out there as you might think. But if there's nothing like that in Oberon, then I won't bother, I guess... *sniff sniff*

Yeah, if there's orange peel in the beer, why would you need more? I think we've already established that NB can ride waves of strangeness...
Fruit in beer - bleah!

What's it called again when you add orange juice to a wit? I liked doing that last summer...

To a Wit? Don't know - only time I've ever taken a chance on juice in a beer (and I believe mentioned to you) was OJ in a very light-bodied, lactic-tart, Berliner Weiss - but that never really tripped my trigger either.

I can't recall tasting the Oberon. If I did it was a long time ago at the Brickskeller. They have long had Bells beers. Bruno is sending me a sixer. I can't wait! I love the Two Hearted as well.
I think the whole lemon thing really got a kick from Widmer. I don't like it either. And I've even had Paulaner served with a lemon.I will however, drink raspberry syrup in my Berlinner Weisse. And I had a wonderful Blueberry beer from Cambridge (Boston)about a decade ago. I still remember it. I remember when fruit beers were all the rage. Thankfully that seemed to have waned although some places (Lancaster and Atlantic) still make them. There were a few good ones but only a very few.
Welcome back from the vacation Uncle Bik. How was the Island?

In years past, Bell's had problems with their bottling - and Oberon (as well as everything else they did) was pretty hit or miss on quality. I think they've worked out those problems these last few years (probably has to do with the opening of their new brewhouse), and I think that bottled Oberon tastes better than ever this year, and of course it's always been great on draft.

Yeah, I thought the orange slice was "kinda fruity", too. I thought if you had to add fruit slice slices to beer, it was because the beer didn't have any flavour to begin with. (see Corona).
However this wasn't the case. The orange slice did enhance the flavour a bit. and besides, when you are on vacation, a little vitamin C never hurts.:D

I'm on IM all the time.
This is a really good beer! It goes down so easy which makes it dangerous at 6%. I have had my limit right now and fighting very hard the urge to drinking one more.
