I've been wondering about the difference in Corn Sugar and table sugar.

I havent tried table sugar yet, but i am curious as to what the differences would be if i used it.

I have been experimenting with malt extract, and the Lindstrom syrup sugar.

I am under the impression that 500g of malt extract is equal to approximately 350g of corn sugar? does this sound correct?

I threw a batch of Brewmaker Shire Mild on with 750g corn sugar and 500g malt extract. That ME is expensive stuff. $6CAD

I would think it would be cheaper.

my knowledge is somewhat limited here, but I'll post anyways... Corn sugar is fructose, and table sugar is sucrose. Does it make any difference to your yeast? I have no idea.

The reason I have no idea is that I rarely add any sugar. It greatly suprises me that you made something with more sugar than malt extract and it ended up actually tasting like beer... Less than half your recipe is DME and you didn't end up with a cidery taste?

corn sugar will leave an aftertaste in your beer. Most mass produced beers have the same aftertaste so if you like budweiser et al then you will like homebeer made with lots of cornsugar.

table sugar (cane sugar) vs corn sugar: I believe that cane sugar is will impart more of a cidery taste than corn sugar.







danno: i believe he used the Kit in conjuction with the corn sugar and DME... so no, he probably had way more extract than sugar.

It will also give you one heck of a hangover for what I understand.....

I use DME to prime my ales and stouts and corn sugar to prime pilsners and lagers or any light bodied beer. Corn sugar gives a nice clean crisp aftertaste that you want in a light bodied beer.

Why does it surprise you that i used more corn sugar than malt extract powder

I added to my Brewmaker Shire Mild kit 500g malt extract and 700g corn sugar.

whats surprising about that? did i do something wrong?
