Hello everyone..

When brewing a beer from an extract kit... the instructions tell you to add all the flavoring hops after the second boil. The book I use for reference tells you to add the first amount of flavoring hops after the second boil and then add the second amount after 30 minutes of boil.
So the questions are: If I were to divide the amount in the kit and add it like the book suggests, how will that affect my final product? Do you have any suggestions on how to do this properly or on doing it at all?

As a rule of thumb I usually use 1/4 the amount of total hops for flavoring in the last 15-30 mins of the boil.

My reasoning is so that the flavoring hops don't obscure any of the bittering qualities of the previous addition and as not to obscure any of the malty character of the beer its self.

Hope that this helps....

I wouldn't add any hops for flavor more than 20 minutes before the end of the boil. Most of the flavors boil away once you go over that time. I tend to add in the last 10-15 minutes of the boil.
