I'll be out in SD next week for a few nights (W, TH) and was hoping for some recommendations in Old Town. I saw some places near by, but I don't have the rental car, so it's got to be walking distance.
Hope you all can help. I would hate to have to spend my per diem on food.

Wish I could help. Don't know if anyone on this board lives in S.D. The best place I knew of closed a long time ago. I believe there is a Karl Strauss around there but I'm not a big fan. I also know there HAS to be some good brew bars around. The good thing is that you have the rail system to get around on. If you find a good place PLEASE SHARE!!

There's a Karl Strauss brewpub in that area of San Diego. They make pretty good beers, nothing over the top, or really big, but mostly delicate drinkable lagers and ales. There is also an establishment called the Yard House not too far from there. They have around 100 taps of various micros and imports, but they are a bit pricey and yuppie. The selection is great if you don't LIVE in the San Diego area. My one strong reccomendation is that you travel a little bit away from the old town area and go to one of the Pizza Port brewpub locations - San Clemente, Carlsbad, or Solano Beach. This is, without a shadow of a doubt, the finest beer brewed in San Diego, and well worth any inconvenience that it takes to get there. A wide range of ales and lagers, and cask conditioned ales to boot.

Ah, well, if you go there ............... yes Pizza Port is the BEST! but it isn't in Old Town. By train?? I was hoping gallowd7 would find a cool place there ( not a chain ). There HAS to be one.

Thanks for the suggestions. How far away is the nearest Pizza Port? I may be able to trick the non bear drinkers into going/driving me.

The closest one is in Solana Beach. Going north it's right after Del Mar. You'll see the racetrack, then the next exit at the top of the hill, left, go to PCH, right and it's there. From downtown I believe it's about a 30 - 45 min drive. Another 15 min and your in Carlsbad wher ther's another one. The Solana Beach has a barleywine on cask. Wish you the best.

Well, thanks for all the suggestions. A compressed schedule (10 hour days) and lack of a car kept me in Old Town. Nothing out of the ordinary. Did have a Yellowtail Pale Ale from a freshly tapped keg and it tasted like a bad lager, not pleasant.
Did stop by the Strauss stand at the airport on the way out and had their pale ale, pretty good. Maybe a trip to the brewpub would make it better.
Thanks again for the suggestions.

GallowD7, You're from Annapolis area right? I was wondering if you knew if the Oyster Stout at Rams Head / Fordham is a regular offering or just a seasonal.
