View Full Version : No more Mr. Nice Guy (that's me)

I've been noticing a trend lately that people think that they can pick on Mr. Bruno and get away with it! Well, I'm here to tell you,
I will not go quietly into the night, I will prevail, youth always wins out over experience, and you can take that to the bank!
I have spent the last several years of my life getting to know myself, and I've come to one conclusion.
Uh...I don't remember what it was right now, but it was profound, and it had great relevence to this situation.
Years ago, when I was the subject of the school bully, I asked myself how I was going to go through life letting other people decide the route I took home. After that, I picked up a large nut, and hurled it at that bully. (true story) Of course, after that, I took off running in the other direction. But that doesn't apply here.
Now, after years of reflection and two college degrees started and not finished, I've decided that I want to finish my studies in the chemical sciences. Beer has inspired me to do this, and will continue to be the main motivation in finishing the degree. I work more than full time, I don't really have any financial means to accomplish this goal, and I don't remember a lick about chemistry.
None the less, I'm going to do this, and then no one will be able to pick on me again.
In the mean time, keep it coming, 'cause it's funny as hell, and I can dish it as well as I can take it!
And that's my editorial for the evening.

au' contraire!! Youth will always lose out to old age and treachery!
They say you can't teach an old dog new tricks...but don't you dare turn your back on him!
That was very funny stuff, by the way! :D

Bruno: I think you deserve a gold star for the day for that post. Note: this doesn't mean I won't pick on you, but I will expect an equally respectable, sarcastic, witty comeback in return.
Don't turn your back on me ;)

I admire the spunk.
That being said, I dont envy you. I set out to do a biochem degree and let me tell you, the classes, well lets just say they are not all about beer and fermentation. I felt cheated. I switched to something easier, like business. :D
I hope you have better luck than I.

 these young kids these days with their mtv and nose picking avatars and crazy ideas...
heh, just to set the record wrong for the final time: i don't have any degrees, either (college was boring) and appear to be semi-successful without having to actually stoop to work (paraphrased quote from the same movie the ram quote came from :p)

Sorry, No respectable, sarcastic, or witty response right now. (one will surely be on the way)
And Tweek, I don't envy myself either. I just hope I get through it without many injuries, either mental or physical.
I just finished an email to the department head at the university expressing my interest in continuing. I hope it's received well.

I've been semi-successful myself, and I have no complaints about my current employment status. I make a decent living, I work for a generous family who has all but taken me in, my job is my hobby (I work in a motorcycle parts and accessories store).
I always wanted to get my life "started", and I just didn't have time to wait for college to be over. Now, I've got my house, I've got my motorcycle, I've established my life, and I don't know why I was is such a hurry for all this.
I've really been a bit of a bump on a log for the last couple years. Now I feel that at 26, I need to do something, or else I'm going to rot with that log. Mom always said to finish school while I was there, that it would be a lot easier then.
Once again, and I won't let her hear this, she was right. The only difference is that back then I was doing it all for her, now I'm doing it for me.
amen to that! maybe even a hell yeah ;)

There is always the route I took...
Get a job brewing beer.
Develop sondylolisthesis/Spondylolisis at L5/S1 (or any other level if you really want to be different).
Have surgery to correct said defect (4 screws, 2 rods, 1 steel cage, 2 fused vertebra and a lamenectomy)
Develop Adhesive Arachnoiditis from having 9 epdiurals, 1 myleogram and the above surgery.
Fill out disability paperwork and sit back and relax.
The only thing I would caution against is the arachnoiditis. There is NO CURE and you WILL spend most of the rest of your life in constant pain.
Good news about the pain, it really cuts down on the beer budget as you spend most of your day on some form of pain med like hydrocodone or duragesic patches. Neither go well with beer.
The sit back and relax thing is also a joke as there is not really any position that is comfortable with arachnoiditis.
Another plus is I am home to see my wife all the time and drive her up the wall!!!
Of course I did get a sweet laptop computer out of the deal. She got tired of my 20,000 questions and constant asking "will you run me to Barnes & Nobles? I finished my 3rd book this week and need more." But that is only because I have not found anything good at the library.
Of course we all need to remember, I AM THE RESIDENT JACKASS. If you do not believe that, just ask me!!!
Time to switch back to my old avatar if I can find it.

Seriously, my web site is down now but for a long time I kept a running journal of my 10 bedridden/hospital-bound years with Lupus/Sarcoidosis and my journey through the hell of pain killers, depression, et all. I believe you must know the drill; we should compare notes.
Now back to this "Resident Jackass" thang.... >:-)

I would be willing to share said title even though it has been under my name for some time. We would then have to call ourselves Mr/Mrs Resident Jackass or something along those lines.
I do have a blog where I started keeping notes of my day to day stuff.

"Oh the wisdom of youth!" One of my old HS teachers used to exclaim that. It comes in handy when you have a 17 year old who thinks he knows it all. We call him "Einstein" when he begins to tell us about the ways of the world.
I never completed my degree either although I did make it through 3 + years. I bought my first condo when I was in college and had to work and attend school to pay for it. My life has been wildly successful and I can only attribute it to being lucky. Good things have happened to me and I can't explain why. Maybe Karma. I'm soon to be 47, and I own several pieces of real estate, own my own successful business employing 15. I vacation frequently and am basically retired as my "Figurehead" job only requires a small amount of the time I spend in the office. In fact I could retire at any time as I have a standing offer from a Fortune 100 company to buy me out. I heartily recommend continuing your education. At one time I considered Law School but at this point I would gain little from doing it. And one other thing....Keep that positive attitude. Positivity and generosity and luck will take you all the way. And don't be afraid to take some chances either.

I went back to college at 27. For me. And got the degree I wanted, not what my parents wanted. And aced every course. Because I went back to school for me. Now I too am more successful than I have the right to be, and also have the satisfaction of finishing something I started.
Good luck with that, young man. If you need a little encouragement now and again, you know you have a fertile field on this forum!

My "higher education" consisted of a year of music school in Hollywood, a semester at Colo. St., and 8 years playing all over the state (and sometimes the country) with a Triple-A Contemporary Jazz Quintet. We were pretty dang popular, but we never quite made it to the Big Leagues. I learned more in my stint with that band than college could have ever taught me, and besides that I was getting paid to be there instead of the other way around - not a bad arrangement!

b3s told me last evening you kept a blog as he knew I would be able to relate to it (unfortunately, he had forgotten the address). I read a good deal of it this morning, and I thank you for sharing that with me. While our "disabilities" are vastly different in nature, it was true I could relate to much of your experience. If you don't mind, I'd like to ask you a few questions about your medical treatment, although I will save that for a PM to spare the rest of the board my whinging about life's cruelties (and because, contrary to my actions, I really DO realize this forum is about the brewing, tasting, and consuming of BEER).
I hope you are doing as well as you can and I am glad to hear you have a supportive mate. I did not.
Take good care.

I too went for the first time at 27 and now going on 35 I will be going back this Spring. Not sure if I will go for the Masters degree but I want to take some more MIS classes for s#*t's and grins.
I think it was easier to relate to the instructors being a bit older and mature then your average freshman. My goals were not to drink and party while away from home. Since it was all on my dime (GI Bill actually) I made sure I got my moneys worth.

When I was at a 2 yr community college, the median age was in the low 30s. It was hard to believe as it seemed all I saw were people my own age. It must have been all those visual distractions.

when i was 16 i thought my father was an idiot...when i was 21 i was amazed how smart he got in 5 years! ironically enough, when i talked to him about that he laughed his cocyx off and then related a similar conversation he had with my grandfather at about the same age!

having performed a lot of interviews out there in the real world i can say that education is important, but (and this is NOT a dig, as it does not apply to bruno at all) there are a lot of highly educated idiots out there. i have been often quoted as saying i can train anyone to do this crap, but i cannot train someone to think -- they either can or cannot.
i will say this, though...unless you are studying something you have passion about, you're wasting your time. work without meaning is empty motion! i say that knowing full well that my professional life for the last few years has been nothing BUT wasted motion -- but someday i'll have the monkey off my back and i'll be free as air to open that brewpub in OR or wherever CB and i land...

Indeed. I feel your pain, wort. When I am not on holiday (as I am now), I get up at an hour most folks do not even HAVE on their alarm clocks (and this in itself does not get pathetic until you know that I don't have to be to work until just before 8 and it's a four minute drive. It's very draining to be the OCD Poster Child) I, too, have to retire early and miss all the fun.

I got to thinking about that after posting it. I believe giving you credit for 40 mph was a bit much. I should have gone with 5 mph.
As far as the focus thing goes, it was a typo as my "u" finger fired before my "c" finger did.
