View Full Version : What does these statistics mean

I was at the Sierra Nevada website and saw these statistics about SN pale ale:

Alcohol Content: 5.6%
Beginning gravity: 13.0 Plato
Ending gravity: 2.8 Plato
Bitterness units: 37
Yeast: Top-fermenting ale yeast
Bittering hop: Magnum& Perle
Finishing hop: Cascade
Malts: Two row Pale & Caramel

What is the meaning of the Beginning gravity 13.0 Plato?
Ending gravity 2.8 Plato?
Bitterness units 37?

I understand the alcohol content and Yeast, Malts, not sure what is meant about finishing hops.

Plato is just another way to represent the amount of sugars in the beer. You can find more information here (http://byo.com/mrwizard/730.html) on converting to specific gravity, which may be a little more recognizable.

Bitterness is achieved from the act of boiling hops in the beer generally longer than 30 minutes. 37 is a measure of the IBUs ( international bittering units), or the overall hop bitterness of the SNPA.

Likewise, finishing hops are hops that are boiled generally less than 30 minutes. These hops dont' really provide much bitterness, but add to the hop flavor and aroma of the beer.

That help?

Seeing the word statistics brought an old saying to mind, my apologies to the ladies.

Statistics are like bikinis. What they reveal is interesting, what they cover up is vital.

Seniority is 9/10 of the law. When I have an important matter that I want dealt with, I don't go to the first person I see, I go to someone with more seniority.

I really ought to change my avatar. Geez!

LOL! You got Couch. Suckers! Don't worry, though, we still don't have a real football team in Cleveland.

How do you keep the Cleveland Browns out of your yard?

Put up goalposts.

What are you talking about? The last I saw Couch he was begging for a job with the hapless Chicago Bears - who rejected him as quickly as the Packers did. I believe he's thumbing his way back toward Cleveland...
