I had a real eye opening experience yesterday, I had a freind that went to a local brewpub for lunch, it's called the Uinta Brewing Co. it's only a block away from work, I have seen it for years, I know that it's a local Microobrew that has won many awards, but I figured it's still 3.2% (4.0%ABV) and it pretty much has to suck.
Boy was I wrong!
We went there after work last night at my friends urging and picked up a "Summer Sampler" which is the only one they currently offer. Thier samplers are all seasonal, though they all include the Cutthroat Pale Ale.
This one consisted of 12 bottles, 4 each of thier Pilsner, Cutthroat Pale Ale, and A Kolsch.
I started chatting with the bartender and was quite surprised at the reaction I got when I mentioned that we brew our own beer.
He instantly was excited to talk to us and began talking about some of the homebrews that he has sampled locally.
It was very interesting and refreshing to talk to another homebrew fan face to face. They are very hard to find here in Utah...
We ended up also purchasing a couple of thier Beer glasses to add to my collection..
Anyway, on to the beer...I didn't have any real high expectations, though I did expect it to be better than A-B Fizzle.
I popped open a Pilsner, wanting to start with the mildest beer first so as to not destroy the flavor by drinking a stronger one first.
The very first thing I noticed was the total absense of the essence of dead rotten fetid skunk carcass that typically assaults you when you pop open a Mega...I was shocked, I actually smelled HOPS!! HOPS!!! In beer! what a concept!
I took a taste and was floored, this beer is GOOD, It's better than good, it's fantastic!
Now keep in mind that I have never tasted a decent beer other than my own homebrew, but I feel completely comfortable classifying this as damn good.
I couldn't wait to get to the other two styles and I wasn't the slightest bit disappointed!
These are how the Mega Swills are supposed to taste like aren't they?
Well, this changes everything! I can actually see a point to wanting to make a Pilsner or an "American style" beer, It's good!
In fact I found myself actually contemplating the unthinkalbe, putting a mega clone into one of my fermenters...
I can't wait to get back there and try the other beers they have on hand, and on tap!
So....go right ahead and make those Mega clones!! You won't hear any more flak from me.
One tip, if you actually want to clone a Mega, I recommend steeping the dead skunk at 150 degrees for an hour.
