I read about this in "What's Brewing". Interbrew are set to close the cask brewery in Manchester and move keg beer operations to another site (Hyde IIRC). Acording the WB article the newly revamped Boddington's Cask (4.1%) has been showing a profit. Not a big enough one by EnormoBrewCo standards I guess.

I just received mine in the mail yesterday. Have not had a chance to read it yet.

I had read that also. :(
Although Boddies is nothing like the fine ale I used to enjoy as a young lad - when it was a prime example of what many consider a unique regional style - Manchester Bitter.
I hope some others can take over the brewery and perhaps recreate what was once a fine beer.
I can't see how they can call it the Cream of Manchester any more.

Thanks for the link MFC:
Here's some things from the forum:

I found myself agreeing with both sides to this argument, although sadly I've not been able to try the new, revived cask that they mention (I had read about it):

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"I'(m old enough to remember when Boddington's bitter was a REAL bitter, straw-coloured beer. I remember when Ewart Boddington fought off a takeover bid from Allied Breweries (where are THEY now?) in the 1960/1970s to the point where the company's advisers said it was "commercial madness".

But then, in those days, Boddie's was worth campaigning for and fighting for.

Listen ,a reply to the old geezer who left the last message. who apparentley remembers' how boddies used to be ' and i am sure at the same time the summer lasted 10 months , city had a decent team and you could go out Friday with a fiver, get bladdered have a fish supper and still have change to have a week in benidorm , but you musn't have tried the 4.1 Boddies cask that came out sometime last year . Its a cracking pint. Its just as good if not better than Boddies ever was. If there is one thing that its 200 times better than, its the dark bland John smiths smooth shite , that seems to be in every boozer , indian , club . Utter Shite .
Good luck to the workers fight on to Save the cream and you will be keeping part of Manchester. "

just clicked on the link and signed the petition. it seems that Interbrew or InBev as they now want to be called are not interested in brewing heritage and are just after chasing the dollars so to speak. i really hope that the campaigners that are trying to keep the brewery open succeed as it would be a sad loss after 230 years!
