View Full Version : New Poll For Tasting On October 16!

fretlessman71
10-04-2004, 11:42 AM
Here it is, as promised... a little late, but that never stopped us. Let's give it until Friday, ok?

Also, I'd like to make the next three tastings based upon this poll. Highest votes will pick the beer for the 16th, next highest for the 30th (or whenever the next one is), and so on. Sound good?

Bruno_78
10-04-2004, 12:57 PM
I voted for the 1845 because I've had the Dead Guy before, and it's less expensive than the Chimay.

chazwicke
10-04-2004, 01:14 PM
I voted too.

b3s

i voted in the 2nd quad-annual FL election, too :p

Ladies and Gentlemen, We've got one doozy of a race here!

1845 got out to a nice lead early in the day while the chimay gradually made some good ground closing the gap. But don't underestimate the dead guy (coming in dead last), his steadfast endurance may be his winning quality.

Stay close to see all the developments in this very heated contest!

i put in a vote for chimay blue for the selfish reason that it's easier for me to pick up than the 1845, though i have found one place that sells the 1845.

Jeff
10-05-2004, 11:58 AM
I voted for the Chimay because I can get it locally. I will have to trade for the 1845.

staronstage
10-05-2004, 12:12 PM
I voted for the Chimay ... cause I looooove it. :)

chazwicke
10-05-2004, 02:02 PM
I accidentally voted twice. Take away one of the 1845 votes. I did not know you could vote more than once so I tried it.

fretlessman71
10-05-2004, 03:04 PM
Hmmm.... it shouldn't have let you do that. Wonder what happened there. I'll take one away, but it may not matter at this point.

BTW... got your back on your ill-aimed posts earlier. You're cool!

If anyone else seems to be able to vote twice, please let me know and I'll see what I can do. (And please refrain from voting a second time no matter HOW much you're rooting for your favorite beer!)

corysdad
10-06-2004, 09:42 AM
I'm in for the Chimay too. Local paint store (please note first time for using "paint store" prase) usually has in stock and Star makes me wonder why its so good.

danno
10-06-2004, 12:31 PM
I'm not voting cause I won't be there, but just remember whichever beer wins, make sure you serve it properly... Neither Chimay nor 1845 is anywhere near as good cold as it is at 50º-55º...

Go Twins!!! :D

stronk
10-06-2004, 01:04 PM
I'm not voting, but: go 1845!

fretlessman71
10-06-2004, 02:15 PM
So far it looks like we'll be doing Chimay Blue on the 16th and 1845 on the 30th. Keep voting if you think you're going to be there!

(Oops... now that I look closely, I may have a conflict on the 16th... jeez! That's okay; I can always read the transcripts while drinking... :) )

Stodbrew
10-06-2004, 03:28 PM
Once again, I won't be able to attend on the 16th, as I will be in Chico for the weekend. But I'll be sure to hit Sierra Nevada and drink whatever special beers they have on at the time.

fretlessman71
10-09-2004, 04:44 PM
Looks like Chimay won! Everyone go and get your bottles of Chimay Blue and be ready one week from today!

I'm afraid you'll have to survive without me this time; make sure someone saves the chat and sends it to staronstage and Jinja for me, ok?

Oh yeah - plan on doing Fuller's 1845 on the 30th of Oct., too!

studentofbeer
10-09-2004, 05:32 PM
got my chimay blue today and should be free next weekend, so i'm finally coming to a tasting.

b3s
10-09-2004, 06:18 PM
i didn't get my chimay yet, i'll get that after i'm back from CA. i'm wondering if that fuller's 1845 i've been cellaring for a year should be my selection for the 30th or if i should get a fresh one...

skahtboi
10-10-2004, 12:55 PM
I, too, will be unable to attend on the 16th, as I have a niece who is getting married that day.

Unless....do you think she would mind if her favorite uncle showed up with beer on his breath?

Are they all dated on the labels, as these look to be? Even the large bottles? I haven't taken the time to investigate the bottles at the small liquor store around the corner.

fretlessman71

....seems that every time I turn around, there's someone else who really wanted to be there this Saturday who can't make it. Now, Steveh has added his name to the list of those who would be "conspicuous by their absence", and this has forced me to ask about who would be in favor of pushing this back a week to Oct 23. I know there was at least one of you who was psyched because you were FINALLY going to make a tasting, but I'm not really sure what to do here. Thoughts?

PS: I'm one of those who is going to be unavailable this weekend... but since Jinja and Staronstage put the tasting website up, I have no problem with whatever the group decides. Let me know, ok? Thanks!

chazwicke
10-14-2004, 04:00 PM
I vote for moving it. The following Saturday or perhaps we could try one on a weeknight or a Sunday. It might be hard on a weeknight due to time zones but I'll bet more people would attend. I'll go with the group decision though.

fretlessman71
10-14-2004, 04:05 PM
I second the motion, and have made two votes: one for me and one for chaz. Lemme know what all'y'all think, 'kay?

staronstage
10-14-2004, 04:07 PM
You can add two more that won't be able to make it this weekend. Jinja and I are volunteering (to pour beer) at the "Brew with a Boo" (www.brewwithaboo.com) festival at the Shoreline Amphitheater.

I vote that we postpone until 10/23.

staronstage
10-14-2004, 04:09 PM
For some reason they poll won't let me vote. When I pull up the thread it goes right the results.

Fret, can you please add a vote for "postpone to the 23rd" for me?

Thanks!

fretlessman71
10-14-2004, 04:29 PM
Yeah... I tried to get too tricky with the poll. I "re-used" the one from before, but it still has the marks of who's voted and who hasn't. Just post your votes here, and I'll make the necesssary adjustments.

the next week isn't really good for me because Ill be going to a conference (I think) but perhaps the week after that? sooooo long to wait...

steveh

I can't guarantee next week either, I have plans for Friday night that could stunt Saturday's get-up-and-go...if you catch my drift. But don't rule it out completely just 'cause o' me.

Guys, I am new to this, cant seem to register a new vote. I wanted the 16th because I was free. The 23rd puts me out even though the next day will be my birthday and the Chimay would be awful nice, I will be out of town and not able to take my time online for this.

So, I am out for the 23rd. Sorry gents. Have fun, Ill catch you on the next one.

fretlessman71
10-14-2004, 07:35 PM
Keep watching this... tomorrow night we'll decide. OR... we could do it both weekends for each group of people who can do it on the respective days! What about that?

corysdad
10-14-2004, 07:39 PM
Matters not to me. Saturday afternoons usually work for me. So if it would help to move to the 23rd so more could attend then I will vote for it.

Fret, please use my vote as needed. The poll is telling me that I already voted.

b3s
10-14-2004, 07:46 PM
i would prefer to keep the 16th. i cannot make the 23rd at all.

Yep - I'm systematically making adjustments in the poll as people voice their opinion. Fear not - just tell me what you think!

Personally, I think we ought to do two of them, and all of us are free to either or both. So we need a volunteer to host the one for tomorrow if it's going to be done....

studentofbeer
10-15-2004, 10:33 AM
tho it's a bit late in the game, what about sunday, or a sunday, as opposed to saturday? just a thought.

Bruno_78

Sundays would ABSOLUTELY, DEFINATLEY, 100% work better for me.

:)
Toney.

fretlessman71
10-15-2004, 06:05 PM
Toneyc, we're doing these on AIM @ 4:30 EDT, 1:30 PDT. Running out of people who can do the tasting tomorrow, and some people can ONLY do tomorrow. I still say we make this a dual tasting, with the people doing the 2nd tasting using the notes from the first one. Haven't had any comments on this....

danno
10-15-2004, 06:34 PM
who's going to be hosting this tomorrow? The Boy Scouts took a look at the weather report for this weekend (high of maybe low 40's and possible rain all weekend) and decided to wait until spring to go canoeing... I may be able to join, just want to know who's handling lead in case I make it...

fretlessman71
10-15-2004, 06:44 PM
You'll have to handle it amongst yourselves. I'd start PMing those who have posted above that they'd like to be there tomorrow and see if you can organize it. It might even be easier when there's not 15 people in the room! :)

chazwicke
10-15-2004, 07:46 PM
I may be able to host it tomorrow. If we do not head to the inlaws. Anyone who wants to try tomorrow make sure I have you AIM screen name so I can invite you in. Let me know as soon as possible as it might aid in my arguement to not travel to the inlaws.

My wife would never buy that. "I can't go to the inlaws, I have to stay home and drink beer while surfing the internet" ;)

chazwicke
10-16-2004, 08:23 AM
I'll tell her when she gets in from mowing the lawn and fixing dinner and doing the laundry. In my house "It's My Way Or The Highway!" But please don't tell her I said that.

Actually my wife is great about that stuff. After all, I've been doing my beer quest for 30 years. She is a good sport and knows all travel will be centered around beer or breweries. And I love my inlaws too. I just had not really planned on going out there today. I told her a day or two ago that we were changing the tasting date so she made tenative plans. Looks like today is going to be nice out too. So I'm sure the lobby to head out to the countryside will be strong plus a couple of Nephews from NC or on Fall break and will be out there too.

Stingo
10-16-2004, 09:47 AM
So being new to this can someone explain to me what happens, is it a chat room we have to log into or is it done through this particular page? If I were to participate where do I go and when etc?

Thanks!

fretlessman71
10-16-2004, 09:51 AM
Here goes... You need to download AOL Instant Messenger first. Go to www.aol.com and follow the links - it's very easy and harmless to your harddrive. Pick a screen name, and about an hour before the tasting, post your screen name IN THIS THREAD, and those who have begun the chat room will make a point of inviting you. If you can get a bottle of the brew of the day(Chimay Blue Label), be sure to take it out of the fridge about 20-30 minutes before the tasting starts. You're not required to have a bottle with you, but it makes the experience much more enjoyable; besides, without it, you'll just be very jealous of everyone else there. Make sense?

Stingo
10-16-2004, 09:57 AM
Sure easy enough, but will I get pestered with aol spam? I dont have aol and dont want it ever.

AM having trouble locating chimay blue label so may get something else and just pretend... but will be fun to observe and see the process. I will try not to buy Pabst Blue Ribbon, just not quite the same ya know?!

Thanks!:D

fretlessman71
10-16-2004, 10:02 AM
You don't need an aol account to do this. It's simply a chat program - you'll be safe. This is how I communicated with my friend-->girlfriend-->fiancee before she moved out with me -- works great!

Where is Homewood? You sure you can't find it? It's sort of ubiqutous, isn't it?

corysdad
10-16-2004, 02:44 PM
So whats the final verdict? Chimay today or what? If so I have to run up to the store because I don't have the proper glass. According to my 750ml. bottle the pint glass is "x'd" out. I don't have the other style, not sure what it's called.

Thanks for the welcome, all. I'm not sure I belong here, but I will say that b3s has certainly taught me a few things about appreciating good beer. Concrete Blonde is this:

this:

Point well stated, taken, and digested, Mr. Fretless. Thus, why I am saving said story for some lonely, rainy, *cough* desperate *cough* night. (Although, I'll still be demanding royalties in the meantime).

Why bore you with facts when the mystery is *SO* much more intriquing and when there are better things to discuss like old rock n' roll, bad lip synching rappers, and ...oh yeah...I think someone mentioned BEER around here once upon a time....

b3s
10-19-2004, 07:16 AM

and fret, i don't recall any aliens in the story, so prepare to be disappointed, but i can tell you a joke about aliens in the meantime if that helps (this one's for fret):

Two aliens from outer space landed in Las Vegas and were wandering around the casinos. One of them volunteered to go inside and see what was happening. He came out looking rather shocked.
"What's the matter?" asked his friend.
"It's a very popular place," replied the first alien.
"It's full of creatures that keep throwing up little metal discs."

OK, so I got a better one....

Two aliens are in a junkyard eating cars.

One pops an early '80s Toyota into his mouth, rubs his belly, and says, "Oh, what a feeling!"

His compatriot holds up a similar vintage large sedan, and says, "Wouldn't you really rather have a Buick?"

The first one slaps his head and says, "OHHH! I could've had a V-8!" ;)

Funny you should mention that particular reference...

You know when you purchase software for your home network and you're asked to fill in your company name? (We all _do_ purchase software, right? :-D ) Or when you simply want to read Dave Barry's column or see what's on the idiiot box at 3 a.m., and you are forced to "register" in some annoying-SPAM-assuring form before allowed to do so?

When they ask for my Company Name my standard response is:
"Dancing On The Edge." :p

As for IMDB...I'm disappointed in them if they are letting any Tom, Dick, or Steve just pull what they *think* are correct quotes out of their...hat and put it on their site. THey should have someone checking that stuff out. I looked long and hard to find that quote for my sig and now it's been _RUINED_!! :-(

OTOH, I'm leaving it as it is as a matter of principle. ;-D

The casino? Full of creatures? Throwing up (regurgitating, barfing, spewing, Ralphing) little metal discs? Coins? One-armed bandits? Slot machines?

See, they're aliens - they really don't know what "creatures" inhabit the earth? Oh, never mind.

OK what is next? Maybe a new poll Fret. There were discussions of Fullers London Pride, Porter and 1845 during the Chimay tasting. Maybe we should open a new thread asking for suggestions again and also the best date.

fretlessman71
10-24-2004, 10:43 PM
I think we had sorta kinda agreed to make the runner-up in the last poll the one for this coming tasting. Sorry I missed yesterday - too much came up at once, and, well, duty calls....

Anyway, the results of the last poll make 1845 the choice for the next one. All we have to do is decide on the date, I guess.

There's another way to do this, if we want: Anyone who wants can host their own parallel tasting! All they have to do is advertise here in this forum, and tell people when they'll be on, and what beer they'll be drinking. This way, instead of having to try to align the schedules of 10 or 15 people, anyone who wants to can join one if they see one they'd like to join! (Note: if you advertise a tasting, and no one shows, this does not mean that nobody likes you!) We can have an official one like we've always done, and we can still have people do "off-realbeer" (instead of off-Broadway) tastings on their own. Let me know what you think, and let me know what day would be good for you. Personally, I think the 6th might work for me at the usual time, assuming I'm not in the studio longer than I expect...
