I thought I'd get an early jump on this tasting as I learned at our previous tasting some didn't get the full impact of the H-P due to - ahem, prior imbibing.
Pilsner Urquell is a light, subtle, sublime beer with soft flavors that can definitely be effected by other beer, food, breath mints... When tasting P.U. and SNPA side-by-side, I really noticed how the hops from the first beer tasted would actually cancel out the hops in the other. Be it SNPA first or P.U. first. Funny to taste SNPA and have the malts be more forward than the hops.
Anyway, if you want to get the total experience, I highly suggest a clean palate - at least don't be swilling any Big Foot or 60 Minute or Liefmann's beforehand! ;)
Also, I want to suggest an experiment - everyone pour a small glassful (3, 4 oz) of the Urquell about half-an-hour before the chat, place the glass in a sunny window, and after our first taste of the P.U. we'll check the aroma of the set-aside glass to understand what "skunk" really is!

And I suggest that you save the Stilton for AFTER the tasting. :D

Alas, I won't be able to make this one, either. My laptop is still not working, and, more impotantly, I have to go to the Oktoberfest at Los Gatos Brewing Co. I will, however, hoist a liter or two to all of you!

Somehow there's been a lot of confusion regarding the date and time of the various tastings, so here's the scoop:
TODAY , Sept. 25 @ 4:30 Eastern Daylight Time is the parallel tasting of Pilsner Urquell
3 weeks from today, Oct. 16, will be the next official parallel tasting. Voting is not complete, but will end on the 29th of this month.
Hope to see all of you there with your beers in hand!

I won't be able to participate again until November. My kids all have soccer games or gymnastics meets on Sat. afternoons. I'll still read Star's logs and follow along even though it will be after the fact.

...who chatted today. Whether or not we stayed focused on the beer at hand...it's always fun!
Just to clarify against the epithets being thrown around*; I am not now, nor have I ever been prejudiced against ales - that would be as ignorant as being prejudiced against lagers. The beers chosen for the tastings have all been through votes - even the SNPA in the first tasting that I even voted for!
I am not even prejudiced against Gueuze or Lambics - 2 styles of beer that I particularly do not care for -- but I certainly appreciate them for their history and styles in the beer world.
Macro-swill...okay, you'll get a fight there... ;)
*Yeah, I know it was all in fun - once again, it's proven that this is the best forum on the internet!

Hopefully I can make it on time for the next tasting. I hate coming in after everything has started.
It was a great time even though my computer dumped me early. Hopefully that is all corrected now that I have virus scan software!:)
I can't believe I have been passing by Pilsner Urquell all this time when it has been so good!
great tasting, great beer, great time :)
once again, thanks to fret for initiating this, what a cool idea.
