Here is a link to some webcams at Oktoberfest. Each year I like to take a peek at the festivities.

I've been to Munich several times and once at the very tail end of Oktoberfest. I know it's touristy but so what. It's fun!

I made it there in 1992 and even though I was alone, I was immediately welcomed into the tent by the nicest group of people. I don't remember much more of the rest of the night, for obvious reasons, but we had a great time. As much as I hate touristy events, I did the touristy thing and bought a t-shirt, which now has the hallowed role of serving as the cover for my glass carboy for homebrew fermenting. Every time I brew a new batch, I remember that eventful day 12 years ago.

Uh, "the" tent? Which one of the "13" tents did you happen in to?

There were more? DOH! I went into the first one that came along my path and looked interesting. Unfortunately I had to take the train to Leipzig early the next morning, and ever since then I've regretted not staying longer in Munich for the whole fest...or at least not more of it.

The beer in Munich is wonderous but if you are ever there again you must go to a restraunt called The Haxenour (sp). Munchen has great food too. On one of my last visits I was in Paulaner and met an American student at the Weinstephan (SP) who was studying to be a brew master back here in the states. I wonder if he ever completed his study and made it back here to brew. This was circa 93. A visit or two ago. My 17 year old son has been after me to take him to Germany. Maybe I will.

Chaz - do you remember the student's name? It wasn't Huber, by chance? There was once a great brewmaster, young guy, at Flatlander's BP north of Chicago (made great Okto) who went to study at Weihenstephan around that time period. The last I heard (from someone here), he was working for one of the big distributors in Germany - selling beer!

Nope. I can't recall. He said his Parents were well off and were funding his studies. He was taking them seriously. I can't recall much else. I'll have to see if my buddy remembers any details. I was impressed that this guy went to Germany to learn from such a prestigious brewing school. At that time I think there was only UCDavis and the Siebel Institute there in Chicago that were teaching brewing in the USA. Most Brewers I know learned it the old fashioned way. Working their way up the ladder in a working brewery.

I think I recall an article about this fellow in Beer the Magazine or All About Beer from that time. I'll see if I still have those issues. IIRC the fellow was originally from Wisconsin or Wyoming or somesuch. I think he worked in Belgium too.
If it's the same guy that is.
