The Coke/Pepsi thread got me thinking....

Anybody ever try fermenting a couple gallons of Coke or Pepsi?

I wonder what THAT might taste like? Maybe i'll give it a shot and report back..... Maybe Sprite or Mt. Dew might be a better option, since all that sucrose and fructose is in there it'll end up fruity anyway.

Any thoughts on this?

First, let me say this about fermenting Coca-Cola: YUCK!!!!

Second, with a pH of somewhere between 2 and 3, I'm guessing Coke is far too acidic to support yeast growth.

Uggghhhhhhhh

My bet is that it would taste like napalm or rocket fuel if it actually fermented. All of that corn syrup is booze fuel.

Maybe use it as an adjunct. I could see someone using a couple gallons of coke in a 5-gallon batch. Otherwise, it would taste like nastywine.

Yeah, I guess it is a pretty freakin' dumb idea.

As Roseanne Roseanna-Danna would say -- "Never mind" :)

Both JD and Jim Beam have come out with whiskey and Coke drinks... are they just blending, or are they doing something special?

BTW.... Coke is FAR better than Pepsi. Pepsi tastes like carbonated vomit.

I'm mostly guessing, but just like 'wine' coolers or Zima, I think they take a neutral, flavorless malt-beverage base (probably from corn or rice or something else really cheap) and add Coke syrup and a bid of "whiskey flavor".

Then I guess I'd rather drink carbonated vomit than coke.

Coke is great for mixing with whiskey or scotch. Otherwise, there is no purpose for its existence.

Ummmm....HEL-LLLooooooooo??? If they didn't make Coke, I suppose you would expect me to clean the corrosion on my battery cables by some other means?

I don't know if this makes any sense or what, but here it goes.

A couple of years ago, my son received an "orange soda pop" kit for Christmas. It included the extract, stale yeast, instructions, and plastic flip top bottles.
We purchased some fresh champagne yeast and made the kit according to instuctions. Only diff was we put some of the mixture in the plastic bottles and some of it in 22 oz. crown type glass bottles. After a couple of days, the kid notices the plastic bottles bulging. He lets off the excess pressure by opening the cap slightly.
In about a week, we sampled the "brew". I drank from my glass bottle, him from the plastic variety. He said, "this pop taste funny." Mine was alright. He finished about half of his and said, "it tasted like crap." I may add he was feeling a little light-headed. I sampled his and found indeed their must have been alcohol forming in the plastic bottles. The glass bottles tasted just fine.

Sorry for getting off the "carbonated vomit", topic.....
