My friends and I spent labor day weekend in San Diego, here's how it went...

First stop was Pizza Port in Carlsbad. I can't say enough about how good their beers are. I had a tomahawk only pale ale, a cask IPA, and something called switchstance ale which was a strong ale brewed with a ton of centennial hops. My friends had imperial stout, barleywine, and sharkbite red. All the beers were super fresh and absolutely delicious. Note 4 pack of Frank double IPA to go.

The next day we headed south, first stop was Pizza Port Solano Beach location. Once again the beers were outstanding. I had a different cask IPA and a hop monster double IPA called hop 15. The friends had a nitro pale ale, cream ale, and a hefe among others.

Next up we managed to escape the crowds on Coronado Island, and stopped in at Coronado Brewing Company. Had the full product line - gold, hefe, pale, IPA, etc. Their beers were fair, perhaps a little dull in comparison to their competition, but the service was very good. All in all it was a nice way to spend the afternoon.

We spent the evening at the Yard House in the Gaslamp. I don't know why people are so down on this place. Perhaps it's all the yuppiness and pretenciousness of the crowd, but they have a fine selection of draft beers. My Racer 5 IPA, Hop Ottin IPA, and Nectar hemp ale were all quite good.

Next morning we drove in to Sorrento Mesa to Karl Strauss Brewery gardens for brunch. Where else in San Diego can you have barleywine and dry hopped brown ale with a made to order omlette and prime rib? Outstanding food and pretty good beer too.

Spent this evening back at the Yard House, and the following morning back at Pizza Port Carlsbad (couldn't leave without some more of the tomahawk pale ale)

We desparately wanted to get to O'briens, but as nobody there is capable of answering a phone, we couldn't confirm their hours of business. We spent our time and money elsewhere.

I have been to several SD brewpubs over the years. I was last at Coronado in July of last year. I agree with your assessment.

Glad to see someone on this site was able to enjoy P.P. in Carlsbad. It is my favorite place. I am actually glad I don't live close enough to be there all the time. As for O'Brians, I've been there once. Didn't really get the flavor of it. They had some good beers on tap though. The difference is P.P. is all their brews.
