ok, I know I should just "relax and have a homebrew," but if my beer is bad I want to know now, so I can just hurry up and do a new batch. This is what my fermenting wort looks like right now:

it looks gross, but at the same time that is kinda what the hops looked like when I strained them out after the boil (i used pellets)

so basically, is this an automatic sign of badness? This is my first batch in a glass carboy, so I don't know what it looked like the first time I brewed :)

Airyk,
Relax dude!! That's exactly what it's supposed to look like!
I know it's nasty, but it's kind of cool too....
It's all the protiens and residue being carried up to the top of the foam by the constant upward motion of the bubbles.
This will eventually all move to the glass just above the level of the beer.
They say that the protien material is exceptionally bitter, so when you move your carboy, take care not to disturb it. It's pretty much impossible to not get any of it back into your beer unless you transfer in the same spot you fermented, which would be ideal.
Just carry the carboy carefully, don't slosh it around. The stuff is stuck to the sides pretty well at that point anyway...

You shoud see what the foam on some of the darker beer looks like!!

Yeah. What Paul said. This is just a normal part of the process.
