View Full Version : Hops adjustment for full boil?

I did a quick search and I poked around in ProMash so please forgive me if I overlooked the answer to this question:

Is there a chart or some sort of formula or a ProMash function that can adjust your hops usage on a boil volume basis? Example: I want to do an extract kit that I have done in the past by doing a 3 gallon boil, but I want to start with 11-12 gallons this time for a ten gallon batch. It is a fairly bland honey wheat recipe so I don't want overwhelming hops utilization, ya know? The 5-gallon batch recipe calls for 1.5 oz Centennial @60 and 1 oz Tettnang @15. How do I adjust that up for a 10-gallon batch, full volume boil?

Thanks!

On the recipe screeen, check the box that says "lock ingredients to batch size". Enter your ingredients for a known size, then increase the "batch size"; the ingredient quantities will adjust automtically.
I'm not sure how that changes based on full volume boil vs a partial, but it is a good start.

So is there a way to do this without promash? I have done a two full boils and didn't adjust the hops and it definately affected the outcome.

Just got home a little while ago and did the lock ingredients to batch size thing in ProMash and cranked the size up to 10 gallons. All it did was double all the ingredients, including the hops. So I don't think that's the answer I'm looking for.

Toney, in ProMash system default settings, and Measurements, Sizes, Precision, there's a check box that says "Wort size always equals batch size". uncheck that, adjust you wort size downwards, and see what happens to your hops...

Ah-ha! That was the key! OK, so I had to set the original batch size to 5 gallons, wort volume to 2-3 gallons, and record the IBUs then uncheck the lock, change the batch size to 10 gallons, the wort volume to 11 gallons, then play with the hops quantities until the IBUs matched (somewhat) the values I had recorded. So in my example, if a 5 gallon batch with a 2.5 gallon boil had Bittering hops IBUs of 55.2 and Aroma hops IBUs of 4.2, a 10 gallon batch with an 11 gallon boil would need 2.25 and 1.50 oz respectively, not 3 and 2. Excellent!

Thanks, Danno!

Uhhhhh..... I concur.

Do you realize just how much of a brewing geek you sound like? That is THE COOLEST!

How do I get to be as cool as you? ;) I think that's in my Top 10 favorite posts! YIKES!

here's what I found interesting, both the bittering and aroma hops were decreased by 25%. It would seem to me that there should be less of a decrease in your aroma hop because you're boiling it for a (much?) shorter time, therefore there's less utilization, so there should be more hops. For example, if your recipe called for 2oz at 0 minutes, I'd be tempted to just use what the original recipe called for, and not decrease it at all...

does anyone else think it's weird that even though Toney doubled the batch size, the full boil decreased his total hops? And I'm not sure I'd make the wort size bigger than the batch size, since elsewhere in ProMash you're accounting for boiloff, trub, etc...
