I just had a great dinner party over the weekend. Suprinsingly the favorite beer was Shinerbock and the favoritre music was The Cure. I decided to play the cure's new cd because one of my co-workers at UMG recommended it. It has amazing songs that really went well with our beer tasting.

I used to listen to the Cure once in a while back in college - Pictures of You was one of my favorites.

Hmm, Shiner Bock and The End of the World... ;)

S.

Hops - you're right, Pictures of You is great.

I too liked some of the Cures music back then. Not so sure about Shiner Bock though. What were some of the other beer offerings?

If you like the Cure then you need to be checking out Siouxsee & The Banshees, especially Nocturne (LP). Robert Smith was a one time band member (so was Adam Ant) and way back when, Sid Vicious was also known to play a song or two with them.

If you need something from their "popular" songs I would say "Cities in Dust" about 86-87 got some airplay (at least on Long Island) and later in 88 "Peepshow" was given a shot. Their best stuff though remains in the music stores.

I was a Cure fan back in college too. Reminded me of a funny bit I saw on some tv show back then...some show similar to SNL, but it wasn't that one. Anyway they were doing a bit with Robert Smith and Morissey as interior decorators....everything was dark and gray and dimly lit....(in depressed English accent): "No, it's not quite dreary enough..." God, I laughed my ass off at that. Wish I could remember what show that was....

yeah, I'm a Cure fan too.. they came out with a 4 EP live set around "Disintegration" that was totally awesome... I never liked the song Fascination Street until that live version came out, it's stellar...

several years ago Robert Smith guest-starred on South Park. Smith and Leonard Maltin fight an evil Mecha- Barbara Streisand... and at the end, Robert Smith "roshambo's" Cartman, just for good measure...

I always liked Siouzsee Siou - I didn't know Smith was a band member. Was he able to travel with them, with his aversion to flying?

Not sure how he traveled but Nocturne is a live album and he played on it. He is credited on that Album and I believe a few others where he played guitar.

How he was actually a band member I am not sure as they did so many projects over the 20 years or so and he has various credits with them.

I actually saw Siouxsie and the Banshees at the first Lollapalooza in '91 - one of the many reasons why I listed it as the best concert that I've ever been to. I really liked some of their later stuff like "Face to Face", "Fear of the Unknown" and especially "Kiss Them For Me" - which I could listen to all day and not get tired of...

I got lucky and was stationed in SoCal in the late 80's and saw them as well as some other great bands playing small venues. Oingo Boingo, Hoodoo Gurus, Thrashing Doves etc...

Oingo Boingo, now there was a GREAT live band. The energy they put into their shows, and the musicianship, too, was absolutely phenomenal. I was lucky enough to see them three times at the tiny Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium. Awesome!

Danny Elfman has continued to make a name for himself by doing a lot of stuff for Hollywood.

It is the 80's child/teen in me.

I'm the same way. Often times, the pub will have '80's music playing over the satellite. And I will annoy all of the servers/bartenders with my inane variations on the songs, as well as all of the useless trivia that clutters my brain. It's a great time!

the last beer dinner party i did was at my g/f's house last thanksgiving -- case of homebrew, bottle of chimay dubbel, bottle of chimay trippel, 12-pack of moose drool, and a 6-pack of mctarnahan's (forget which one)...no, we did NOT drink all of it in one night (well, the Chimay's we did)...her daughter had that skyy bottled drink (she call's that beer  ).

the dubbel was probably too dark for the turkey, but the trippel was just about perfect and was the best beer, imo, of the evening. my g/f really likes my wheat beer, so she preferred that, but sampled all of them.

You've gotta be a Weird Al fan, then, right? :D

Chalk another one up for The Cure, Siouzsee, et. al!

I just found the channel called "Radioactive" on the Digital Cable Music. The playlist is all of this kind of music (sans Weird Al, sorry fret!). I just heard "Cities in Dust" over the weekend.

The Cure's "Mixed Up" cd is what got me into Fascination Street. It's got remixes of 10 or so songs, including that one, and it's a stellar disc.

I was wondering about the new CD. I saw it was pretty high up on the CMJ list recently. Everything old is new again, huh?

If you have Yahoo premium services they have a pretty good "new wave" station. However if you program your own station you can get rid of some of the crap that they consider to be from that genre. My station plays everything from early Iggy Pop to King (Love & Pride).

Anyone remember Opus, Live is life?

That would be the song and I tried to spray them but my mother about had a shit fit after spending $150 on a pair of Docs. Funny thing is how Doc's were the in thing again a few years back. I still have some from the 80's in my closet upstairs.

Elfmans best sound track is Edward Scissorhands. I think he did some of the Batman movies and Nightmare Before Christmas. I liked Oingo Boingo and I like his solo soundtrack work.

The Hoodoo Gurus? Somebody else has actually heard of these guys? Now I'm going to have to disc that disc out of the pile and play it at the office today...

Blow Your Cool is one of my favorite albums, it is right up there with The Alarm "Strength."
