Okay, now you're just being mean. ;)
Let's see, I can count about 22 breweries (including brew pubs) within a 45 minute radius of my condo! Of course, that also includes 2 U.S. macros that none of us would rather drink, but the majority is pretty good!

You're preaching to the choir here (an American phrase, not sure if it translates), I was just cleaning my various krugs yesterday and counting up the 6 trips to Germany I've made - for beer. ;)

Not really, and that's only a 45 minute radius - if we push a little farther...but no, it's no Bayern - oder Franconia!

Where in Germany have you been so far ?
Funny thing about my wife is that she hated beer until she came here. Of course she never had beer, only that canned abomination they sell as beer over there and after that she never bothered to dig deeper until she realized the error of her ways. Now she enjoys a good brew as much as I do, hehehe. Talk about successful trans-atlantic relations.

You don´t want to see the list if I push the radius a little further, hehehe. I do have a fairly complete list of breweries and brewpubs in Bayern and trust me, it´s loooooooooooooong, hehehe.

I can inquire. The price of the glasses will probably not be the problem. The shipping will. German postage rates is insane and if glasses are still oK after flying over the big water and having been through US customs I dare not say.
But getting glasses per se isn´t hard.

So you haven´t been to eastern Bavaria yet. Bamberg is a good place for beer. But Bayreuth and Kulmbach are better and in the area between those two, Nürnberg to the west and Regensburg to the south is the majority of Bavarias microbrews. Bavaria (thank God) has been largely untouched by the centralisation and bastardisation of the german beer market.
Death To Interbrew !

Not unless you count the trip from Munich to Berchtesgaden then on to Salzburg. In between we were able to find some very good beer, including a small brew-pub just outside Berchtesgaden.
And it doesn't take much to twist my arm into a trip, not much but money! ;)

Nope, München to Salzburg is southern Bavaria or "Voralpenland". Eastern Bavaria is the Donau (Danjube in US) Valley and the Bavarian Woods east of that. When you look at this map www.kaninchen-bayern.de/_html/bezirke/bezirke.htm it´s the "Oberpfalz" and "Niederbayern".

Actually there are several that aren´t even on that list. Number 34 (Prösselbräu in Adlersberg) is under 10 minutes driving from where I live, just outside town in an old monastery on a little hill. Most of the old buildings are still standing so it´s a very nice place. They´ve been brewing beer there since 2 centuries BEFORE Columbus set sail. One can also eat there very well. We had our wedding feast there as well last year, even my Dad-in-law had a few of those beers. And as a freshly retired police officer he never drinks normally, hehehe.

This is just one man's opinion, but to me Bavarian beer is German beer.
BTW I went to Regenburg a few years back. A friend I was with was looking to eat some wild boar which they had at some restaurant there. I think we had some T&T beers.

T&T (Thurn Und Taxis) does not exist anymore as an independent brewery. It was sold to the Paulaner group a few years back and to be honest, it wasn´t a big loss. There was and still is much better brew in Regensburg.

I've been here. A friend of a friend got me a tour of the brewery, after which Herr Jacob himself gave us dinner in the attached restaurant. It was marvelous.
the biggest surprise ,technically speaking. was how much gas the yeast put out at temperatures approaching freezing.
Herr Jacob confessed that his best beer was his wheat; I thought they were all great, but I coudn't really be critical.
He has a hotel attached to the brewery. I hope to take my family there someday.

Yes Welcome! I've had good beers from Lafayette Brewing in Indiana as well.
Fret, I looked for some Gumballhead today at the Annandale/Alex Whole Foods and they did not have any. I usually go to Vienna WF. I ficked up Avery IPA and a new one I had not tried before from Czech Republic called Old Stork. I was on my way out to the beach. I have 2 Gumballheads here. Those are mine! I'll keep looking and if I can find any more elsewhere I'll send one to you.

I got to braurerei Jacob only because a friend of mine got a job at grafenvoer(sp?). I went to visit him and he took me all over bavaria. I had zoigl! in five different places, including a town called "Neuhaus", where I learned the following from a beer mat:
Hast du kummer oder schmertz? Druck einen zoigl dir ans hertz!
I can read German language (although I do not understand what I read) well enough to make native speakers think I understand them. I had great fun with that in Neuhaus.
I was able to ride a bicycle from Pressath to Parkstein, about fifteen kilometers one way, without fear fo my life.
Everything I ate was inexpensive and top quality.
Wine and beer were inexpensive, as fits these essential foodstuffs.

It's sort of the same as Guinness is good for you! or Guinness for strength! ;)
Though I have no idea what Zoigl is - must be a local delicacy. Didn't get to try it in my visits.

Zoigl is a regional delicacy that´s mostly brewed around the town of Marktredwitz. It´s unfiltered very fresh beer that doesn´t keep at all. It´s basically homebrew that´s consumed right away. The farmers who just made some hang the Zoiglstern (Zoiglstar) that looks like a David Star out the window and people come to drink.

Hast du kummer oder schmertz? Druck einen zoigl dir ans hertz!
let me try a literal translation:
you have a hangover, or headache, push a zoigl into your heart.
something like that,,,

I just received this email:
Greetings All!
You may have heard the news already, but there is a new brewery
in Bamberg. It's called Ambraeusianum and it is located at
Dominikanerstr. 10 -- just two doors down from Schlenkerla.
They opened August 4th, and owner Ambros Mahr (no relation to
the Michel family of Mahr's Braeu) calls it the "First
Gasthaus Brewery" in Bamberg. They currently serve three beers:
Hell, Dunkel and Weizen, all unfiltered and brewed on the Kaspar
Schulz system located in the main room.
They also have a website (just up in the last week) at
www.ambraeusianum.de and you may be able make out the side of
my head -- wearing a FranconiaBeerGuide.com cap, of course
-- in the picture at the lower right.
Be sure and check them out on your next trip to Bamberg -- and
tell them you heard about them here!
If you would like to be removed from this email list, send an
email message to unsubscribe@FranconiaBeerGuide.com or send a
postal request to P.O. Box 10986, Marina del Rey, CA 90295
Prost!

Not according to "The Beer Drinker's Guide to Southern Germany," the book I used as a guide to Bamberg when I visited. According to that book, one of the Rauch breweries has a hotel attched. We tried to make reservations there, but didn't know enough German and kept getting hung up on! We ended up having dinner and some brews at the place - very good all around.
Dunno, maybe they were just owned by the brewery - I'll have to look at the book over the weekend.
Oh, and Chaz - Bavaria doesn't need cask ale with a brewery at every turn - all the beer is fresh and delicious enough! ;)

Just funning you about the cask ales. I stayed in a hotel across from Schlenkerla. The parking garage was motorized and they stacked up three cars by raising the floors.
I have always enjoyed the local beers in Germany.

I've never had the priveledge of having cask ales. Perhaps the zoigl is similar in spirit? Rich, thick, very fresh, and had in cozy - not to say cramped- small halls at narrow long tables with most exellent german food of the sort that's hard to find in the US.
(stops to wipe drool of of chin) and more good cheer than is seen outside of fasching,,,

Bodenwöhr is 30 minutes driving to the north from where I live. With so many others closer I hardly ever get out there but it sure is a very nice place.

I think the term he was fishing for in the initial posting was Brewpub instead of "Gasthaus Brewery". Pretty much every brewery I know also runs one or more places on their own that of course only offer the beers of that particular brewery. On the other hand it´s a pretty rare thing when a small brewery only and exclusively brews for their own place and doesn´t supply others.
About the ale issue, we don´t drink Ale in Bavaria. It´s considered flat and tasteless around here. Which is an injustice. I´ve been to England often enough to tell. But that´s just a regional thing here in Europe I guess.

That is the wonderful thing about America. We have a huge variety of styles to choose from both Lagers and Ales. We can get some of the best and worst of both.
I can see how you might consider the cask ale flat as it is less carbonated (one of the reasons I like it) but Tasteless?! It has been my opinion that Ale in general has more assertive flavors than lager. I definitely enjoy both but English (and Scottish) cask ales are my personal favorites.

Well, in Europe you have to go to the place where something originates to get it. Which is fine by me, I like travelling.
I do not consider cask ale flat and tasteless, I said it´s the common perception around here. I also said I felt that was an injustice as my travels to England have shown me that Ale can be a very good thing.

Where do you live TB? I visited a great Bräuerei Gasthaus just north (20 minutes at the most) of Berchtesgaden. Great beer, food, and Gemütlichkeit - sorry I can't remember the name.

I live near Miesbach
Ayinger Bräu is close by, so is Auer Bräu, Flötzinger Bräu, Erdinger (by the FJS Airport), Traunstein is close by as well.
Und wo bist du? Bist du auch in Bayern?
Actually the Czechs drink more beer per capita than the Germans.
In the Berchtesgaden area are the Hofbräuhaus and Wieninger Breweries

I spent some time in the spa town of Bad Reichenhall (sp?) several years ago. I was there during May Day festivities. I also remember drinking a beer called Suffacator. I do not recall the local brewery name. This town must be in your vacinity. Any idea?

For those who do not know, Reichenhall is a tourist town, lovely, near Berchtesgaden Bavaria, near Austria

I love the Berchtesgaden Hofbräuhaus! The view from the Biergarten has to be the most breathtaking beer drinking scene next to the rest-stop (yes, with beer) on the hiking trail down from the Eiger.
I'll have to check into Wieninger, see if it's the one I visited.

Roland, a brew meister down the road, will have to be consulted.

I am certain I have some coasters / beer mats somewhere with the brewery name. I'll have to dig them out if I can. It may be spelled Suffocator or Sufficator.

Oh, that's for sure! Eek - why d'ya think I was at the Hofbräuhaus? ;)
Actually - a pretty funny story in that I rode up with a big group - that included a couple current members or the German Mountain Corp, they weren't in uniform, but had military hair-cuts and unit t-shirts on.
We got right to the top, at the highest point, after the bus and elevator ride, and I watched these two guys disappear over one side of the mountain! I guess they were practicing on their off-time.

My buddy and I were sitting in the front of the bus and the driver swung way out over the edge of the cliff on one of the turns and he laughed at me for being scared. It was NOT funny! Beautiful up top though.
I was stationed in Kaiserslautern for 6 years and tear up the German language, but oh how I miss living there.. couple places I would visit is Fulda and Ettal. I wish I had that many brew places in my naighborhood, but only have Hops!! I continue to drink Bischoff Pils from the Rhein-Eifel area (sold by ABC in Florida)and now crying that I missed another Octoberfest!!
