I would be glad to share, maybe you guys can help me figure out what I'm missing. Tried PU several times seems like it tastes different each time. Maybe it's the light stuck thing. Oh well, I'll try to be there, PU in hand.

Yeah, I had a good time! Wish I could be there for the PU, but I'll be Camping in Lake George -- last camping trip of the season.
And steveh, I started with a Paulaner the next day and it was quite bit better. After reading your review, I'm wondering if what I was getting as the "sourness" was, in fact, the tang from the hops.
Later on Sunday I had a Victory Festbier that I thought was really nice. Good toasted malt throughout!

I was just at the Adirondack brewery in Lake George last month. Nice place, nice people, ok beers. Didn't try the food though. I would like to go back sometime.

I've camped up there too. But it has been a long time.
Boy am I glad to be back using a full size keyboard. :D

I think the beers at Adironack are pretty decent. Nothing over-the-top, but generally solid, on-style beers. They brew a nice Common. We stop there every time we go up. The food's good and the deck is an awesome place to be on a nice afternoon. And we always fill a growler for the evening around the campfire.
...and chaz - excuses, excuses!;)

LOL!
Actually it is true. And when I have to type fast to respond it gets even worse.
I really enjoyed the Paulaner. I was not expecting to be as impressed as I was. I have it every year at different fests that I attend, usually on draught. It was nice to just sit and enjoy it. Definitely makes me ready for some of the local Oktoberfests and German Beer Night put on by the German Air Force in a hanger out at Dulles Airport.

steveh, you've spoiled me - I think I'm partial to german Oktos now! But I'll have to try the american versions again with the understanding that they're not using german malt, probably, and that it's okay. :)

I just looked up the Victory Fest that I had yesterday, and it says they use German Malts and Hops -- not alot of detail, though. I thought it was a damn good representation of the style.
Anyway, I'm not down on the Paulaner, and want to try a different batch. And maybe do a sidebysidebyside with H-P and Spaten...

Oh, you'll be juuust fine, I'm sure. But here's an experiment, and what I did last Friday evening, before our chat, try one or two Ami-Oktos, then pop one of your Paulaners (or Spaten, or H-P) and give it a good slug - you'll really notice the difference in malts then!

Good to hear, did you get a case of Paulaner nonetheless? How was (is) it?

But of course, the news is for everyone - I picked up a 12 pack of the Hacker-Pschorr Oktoberfest last night (best by dated 07/05). The bottle I sampled had a sort of sour nose, and a definite sour back - after the malts.
It reminded me of the Paulaner Jinja was unfortunate to drink this past Saturday. I wonder if there's a problem with some of the yeast Paulaner and H-P used in their Oktos this year. As Paulaner now owns H-P, I wonder if they share suppliers - possibly even trade off supplies and equipment when it's open?
I'll try another bottle tonight, see how it is. I hope I didn't buy a 12 of sour beer. :(

Second bottle was definitely better, and subtly different from either Paulaner or Spaten oktos. Another side-by? Might be necessary.

We've had trouble converting it into something Star can use in his data. I'm going to have one of our chief developers look at it, see if he knows any short-cuts to adapt it and then I can get it to Star - just been up to my neck here at werk.

just so i understand... is there a tasting this coming saturday, Sept. 25? And are we drinking PU? I went out and bought a chilled 12 pack today. Didn't get much of a head on my first one out of the pack, but it tastes good. and we are starting at 1 or 130 PDT? thanks :D
steveh
09-21-2004, 05:57 PM
Student, yes - I believe that's the plan AFA the date and time (1/2 an hour later than previous), and Urquell is the brew.
What's up with no head? Are you pouring it with a good angle to get a head? Is the glass clean? Is it possibly too cold?
S.
Eek - will our tasting conflict with Yom Kippur for anyone?

Vicious circle! I hadn't noticed until I looked at the calendar to double-check the date. Sorry to all those who will have conflicts with this date.
S.
Student, can't you take a cue from Franciscan Monks and fast with Doppelbock? ;)

I've got my PU for this Saturday's tasting. Had one with dinner, was very tasty, no skunk at all. I dug the sixer out that was the furthest back in the cooler out of the lights.
Can someone help me decipher the date code. This bottle reads 04175 12:21. Thanks...

From http://beerdates.com/Czech_Republic
I have deciphered the bottling date code and confirmed it with Pilsner Urquell in the Czech Republic by e-mail. There is a four character code stamped on the bottom of the rear label of every bottle. It is also stamped on the case carton. The first two characters are numbers representing the day of the month. The third character is a letter that represents the month itself, for example, the letter "A" represents January and the letter "B" represents February, and so on. The fourth character is a number that represents the year. Thus, the code 11G1 means that the beer was bottled on July 11, 2001. The shelf life of this beer (import) is one year, so it would "expire" on July 11, 2002.
This doesn't seem to match your code though.

What's yom kippur and what does he have against PU?

Can someone help me decipher the date code. This bottle reads 04175 12:21. Thanks... I'm going to take a wild stab and say that the beer probably expires on April 17th, 2005. But this wouldn't make sense if it was brewed in Europe, as they do day/month/year instead of the way we do it. HMMMMMM......
i was gonna say 2004 17 May...they sometimes do that, too

Mine says 12284. Expires on Dec. 28th, 2004?
while i like PU and enjoy it from time to time, our last choice (paulaner okto) has become a regular at the b3s beer fridge. seem to get a six pack of that during my weekly paint store field trip. hope the future-mrs-b3s enjoys it when she's out :)

No eating, no drinking, no "marital relations", no bathing? Doesn't sound much like a holiday to me!
I think I still prefer thanksgiving.
(*and I'm proud to be a hoosier*)
