Conratulations to Kelham Island on winning Camra's beer of the year at this years GBBF.

Astonishingly Greene King's IPA came second! Can anybody tell me how?

I went out last night and rated this beer once again. To say it was bland was an understatement. Very little aroma, taste and flavour.

What the hell are the camra tasting panel up to.

This smacks of political correctness!

For the benefit of us yanks, what is Greene King's IPA? Is it a macro type beer? What makes it politically correct?

Not that highly regarded, it seems. At least doesn't sound worthy of 2nd place at an event like this:

http://www.ratebeer.com/Ratings/Beer/Beer-Ratings.asp?BeerID=11832

Cheers!

Was the CAMRA decision based on a blind tasting of entrant beers?

Greene King are now the UK's Largets brewer and Pub owner. They have bought a number of smaller regionals and sell most beers under their original brand names. The IPA is a mainstream, rather bland, cask conditioned ale.

As for political correctness, Camra have been the leading light in the campaign for real ale in the UK. As this consumer organisation has become larger it's opinions are no longer representative of the real drinkers! They have to be careful what they say and are trying to please too many people. There is no way under this sun that this ale should have come second in a national competition.

It rates poorly on most of the major beer websites such as

www.qualityales.com

www.ratebeer.com

etc

Thanks for the info!

I, too, am surprised that Greene King IPA did so well. But it is a blind tasting so I can't see that political correctness came into it.

To be fair, it's not a bad beer - but the likes of Youngs and Fullers are, to my mind, better.

Why not take it up with CAMRA www.camra.org.uk ?

Thank you Richard, I was wondering if anyone was going to answer my question.

It's difficult to argue with a blind tasting, unless the judges know what they should be looking for. I've identified my favorite beers in blind tastings before.
