In a thread asking about members' professions (curiously buried in the General Homebrewing forum), the question came up of a thread once started asking about members' choice in transportation. Having not been able to unearth that previous thread, let's begin anew: What'cha drivin' these days?

Year round: 2004 Jeep Liberty Limited. While great for hauling and scoffing at blizzards, the gas mileage is making me seriously think about another car.

Summer months: 1991 Mazda Miata SE. Fell in love with the drop-top fun and sportiness while helping a friend pick out and purchase a new car in '94. She still has hers, I searched this one out when I'd saved the cash. '91 was the first year Mazda put out a Special Edition Miata - only 5,000 vehicles made with certain unique options, including (Richard) British Racing Green paint finish.

When I'm feeling particulary energetic: 1995 Schwinn Cross Cut 12 speed.

Felt like I needed to add the disclaimer that this thread isn't affiliated with The Ides of March in any manner. ;)

2003 Infiniti FX45 (mine), 2003 Chevrolet Astro Van (wife), 2003 Itasca Spirit RV (ours), 1991 GMC Sonoma Pick up with 150,000. (Son thinks it's his) I love that little truck and we use it for weekend hauling and yard work. Bought it new and still runs like a champ. I also love my FX45. I traded my Avalanche in for it April a year ago.

2002 Saturn L200
Nice handling, sporty suspension, and decent acceleration for a 4 cyl. engine.
Averaging 33 Mpg for a mid-size car ain't bad, either. This is my 3rd Saturn and have enjoyed all of them.

Other car is 92 Camry. Boring, butreliable.

Mine, 1977 Chevy Caprice Classic which I switch off with every other week a 1993 Ford F150. 38 miles each way to work everyday, switching helps keep the miles down some.
Wife's, 2003 Hyundai Santa Fe. Fun car, works well for the 3 of us. But I do miss the room of her Ford mini-van that we traded in for the Santa Fe.

2002 Impala, mine: I'm a sales rep., 40K miles per year, yep, that's equivelent to driving 1.5 times around the world...every year.

'99 Yukon: My wife drives it, but in the Fall it's mine when I pursue defenseless animals and birds in the woods of Wisconsin. Homebrewing is a far second to my love of the outdoors.

1992 Honda Prelude (165,000 mi) for me. 2002 Honda CR-V for the wife. We're a Honda family. If Honda made mountain bikes, I'd probably have one...but they don't so a Giant Sedona does the trick.

Well, not ONLY for winter! It's just what I RELY on for winter! On Thursdays I only work a half day, and work upstairs so I have to look nice and wear slacks and all that bs, so I take the Cabrio (top down whenever possible), rather than wear jeans on the bike, change into slacks, then back into jeans; not worth it for four hours.

Before we got the '71 VW Bus (husband's car) the Cabrio was our only transportation.

Now that I live in Missouri (as opposed to So. CAL) I try to ride my bike as much as possible during good weather.

Is this starting to sound like justification? I LOVE MY FRIDA! But I love my bike, too.

Am I forgiven for my wanton mis-use of a convertable?

mine: 97 Saturn SL-2. Only 48k miles, was the proverbial church-on-Sundays grandma car (my M-I-L) until she bought a new Saturn early this year...

wife's: 2000 Dodge Grand Caravan. people hauler and grocery getter...

just sits there almost all of the time, why am I paying insurance on this?: 92 F150. Currently hold lawn clippings waiting for a trip to the county recycling center. The 14 year old has designs on this, but I think this will be a goner this fall, if and when he ever gets his license, maybe a hand me down Saturn would be a better car for him...

My Sunday best car is a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow (I don't know its horsepower as Rolls-Royce simply say that it's "adequate"). It's a 6.75 litre V8 so it's probably fairly high.

My cooking car is a Saab 2000.

My fun vehicles are two pre-war Rudge motorcycles.

"Cooking car" I like that. My friend from Exeter is always on about "cooking lager" (i.e Stella, etc).

I drive a recently stolen and recovered 1993 Dodge Caravan that is a piece of crap. I still can't figure out why anyone would bother to steal it. I guess crack is a powerful motivator.

We're in the market for a new family wagon. Any suggestions?

It's more like the 9-5. The 2000 was the last of the genuine Saabs with the Swedish engine. Saab is now owned by General Motors and they use the regular GM platform, motor and gearbox.

A cooking car is the one you use every day. You don't take a Rolls-Royce out if it's going to rain :-)

In the words of the late Justin Wilson, the Cajun Cook, why would you cook with a beer (he always said wine) you wouldn't drink?

I guess I'd say the same about a car - even if it's my every day car, I want it to be fun to drive.

I think that's very fair comment and, in fact, my Saab is fine to drive. It's a turbo and very quick.

The Rolls-Royce is nicer but, just as you wouldn't want to drink Gales Prize Old Ale all the time, I save it for special occasions.

NICE! I didnt know they had Saleen's in 90. The SVT Contour is a very fun car to drive! I dont own one but have driven one several times and its a blast! Why not keep the GT and get a Roush conversion? Although honestly I dont know if its that much better than a Saleen.

The term is a new one to me but I assume a "beater" is a barely mobile wreck. Here we call them "heaps" or "dogs".

And you're right; even when I drove a 1955 VW Beetle I drove it and kept it in good condition through choice - not because it was the only thing I could afford.

Heap is used over here too, dogs are usually something that won't go as often as it rightly should. A beater is something that you can "beat" in driving it - as in beat up. You basically don't care about it, so you can beat it up.

My first car out of college was a '78 Honda Civic - Hondamatic that I shared with my sister. A beater in the truest sense, but that gem took all the punishment we gave it!

1993 Honda Civic -- 120K miles and still runs like a charm -- the best car EVER. It's looking a little sad due to much body work over the years (not it's fault), but the most expensive mechanical repair to date was to replace a rubber bushing in the suspension last year at $200 or so. Great car.

Last year we traded our 1994 Mazda Navajo (Ford built POS) for a brand new 2003 Mazda Protege ES. Not a sports car, by any means, but the sportiest thing i've ever owned (not that that's saying much).

Since I hitch a ride to the university everyday, and my wife works at home, we don't put many miles on either vehicle these days.

Just an aside here. Ocean City, MD has several car shows each year but the cruisers weekend which is the weekend prior to Memorial Day every year is stunning with the amount or old and antique cars that show up. This year there were 9,200 cars! All1976 and prior. I sat on my balcony all weekend and watched them cruise by. Thousands of them. It was very cool.

Dad rides a 2002 Fat Boy and has been on my ass about getting something. Until the back is 100% again I feel that a bike may not be the best choice.

My first new car was the cousin to the Probe, the Mazda MX-6 ('89 GT). They were both built on the same chasis, with the same engines, at Ford's factory in Flat Rock, MI.

I traded that car in on a lemon '99 Audi A-4. What I regret the most was that I didn't need to - the Mazda had 125,000 miles on it and still ran like a champ - fast too with the Turbo 4 cylinder. I just wanted something new and got nothing but trouble. :/

They were indeed the "same" car. I had to fix some things here and there and the parts were always shipped to the local Mazda dealer for me. IIRC the engine on the probe even said Mazda. Regardless, it was a great car. I put a little over 1/4 of a million miles on it before I sold it and it was still going strong. The only things I ever had to deal with were obvious brakes, tires, tie rod ends and an alternator (what a PITA that was to change on this car).

My first was the afore mentioned 1965 Pontiac tempest. I bought it from family friends who were moving 2 weeks after I got my license. The guy was in the in the calvery and painted everything he owned the calvery colors. The front of the car was red and the rear was white. I wrecked the passenger side door and had to replace it. I got a blue one from a junk yard. So the car was red, white and blue. When I finally sold it in 1976 I told the buyer it was a bicentennial car. Everything else back then was bicentennial this or bicentennial that.

It was an early 1970s. I can't pull the excat year out of my brain right at the moment due to the years passing. You know what they say the...., well something is the first thing to go.

It was a great car. It could sit for two days in sub zero temps and still fire up on the first flip of the ignition. It got good gas mileage due to the fact there was not much car for the engine. I would do it again.

The Trip was great! I'll report in more detail than I did in the VT thread when I get caught up with work, etc.

No Gumballhead available here, and since you talk so highly of it, I think I might need to try it!:D
