Welcome Toshapn, I don't know if Niksicko is available in the U.S., but I'd like to give it a try. I'll keep my eyes open for it.

Niksicko is OK, but my favorite beer from the former Yugoslavia was Union, the best lager I have ever had, well at least tied with Brand from Holland. Do they still make it there? I haven't seen in in ages.

Welcome to the board cmaurice. I sampled beers in the former Yugoslavia too. At a rural bar and was accosted by gypsies. The Yugoslave border crossing was also the only place where i had my car and bags searched as we were heading back into Austria.

Welcome cmaurice! You've found the friendliest bunch of beer geeks this side of Munchen. :) BTW, I was born in Mt View, and used to go to the Alameda County Fair as a very young child!

Chaz... what did the gypsies want? For you to smuggle them across the border?

what a coinky dink....I have a cousin that has lived in Ft Collins for ages. He used to work at a nukey plant, now he works for Resi.
Glad to be a part of this board, I have been coming to the site for about 5 years, mostly looking for homebrewing info, been tasting beers since 1980, things have changed a lot during that time period. Used to go to a shopping center in Concord "The Willows". They had a huge liquor store run by an elderly lady. She was my first beer guru. 4 double door refrig sections of imports. Now the micro glut has taken the lesser selling imports off the shelves, so a lot of beers I tried are not here anymore.

Ah memories.. I remember my first " 4 double door refridg " ..... Hey, no disrespect intended ( I love the fact this website is all about ENJOYING beer and all that it implies ) but I have 2 things I just gotta say:
1. Don't know if I can go with anything that has " sicko" in its name.
2. I can't see writing "the best beer in the world" for anything. Heck, I haven't tried all the beers in my state, never mind the world, and depending on my taste buds.... anyway, hope no one gets mad.
Oh, cmaurice, too bad I didn't know of your location a few years ago. I have a dear friend that lives in Cinci and I woulda loved to have known where to go and have a good brew ( since you brought up coinky dink).

I used to enjoy Pivo and Bip! in several Balkan bars in Milwaukee years ago. I am afraid that they both suffered embargos when the bad stuff happened... BUT! I am a huge fan of Serbian beer as well as the music, dance and food! I played fiddle in a Balkan Orchestra for awhile and loved every Kolo Uchest (forgive the spelling!), every Cevapcici and of course, every Bip! and Pivo. I raise the Belgian I'm enjoying to your gorgeous culture, people and land. I have been trying to obtain both where I work. We carry 2 Slivo's so I think it should be NO prob to bring on at least one good Serbian beer!

Cheers, Janna

With respect to TOSHAPN, I will go out on a limb here. I am not Serbian but I have enjoyed the company of so many that I picked up a tiny bit of the language and certainly the accent. I am not American born myself and had to learn to mimick some accents. The reason for this "lecture" is that I've noticed some members mis-reading the name of this fine Serbian Plzen style. The name shares absolutely NO relation to English words, such as "sicko". Bear with with me here, TOSHAPN. It's pronounced:

"Neek sheeshko peevoh".

I hope this clears up the mis-reference to anything sicko, hehehe.

Cheers! Janna :)

Hi Brown, I hope you read my post as to how to pronounce Niksiscko - the name has nothing whatsoever to do with anything sick. The name is Serbian, not English.

Here's to your tasting bliss!

The Bip in question is another Serbian beer I Used to enjoy at Serbian bar/restaurants in Milwaukee years ago. It's a delightfully yeasty and somewhat malty Plzen style. I haven't seen it in years, sadly....

I love the fact that you named a Bass exercise after the same, haha! You know that I'm a musician myself - what's the "exercise" if you don't mind sharing?

fretlessman71
02-21-2005, 08:14 AM
OK - here goes....

The idea is to play a string (pizzicato, of course - it's an electric exercise) with one finger on the picking hand, and immediately mute the note with the other finger. Electric pizzicato involves two alternating fingers, so you'd pick with one and mute with the next. This "muting" finger is now ready to be the picking finger, and the other finger will provide the mute. So they alternate jobs. The idea is to mute the note as soon as you can, thereby making the note as short as possible. The note, when played properly, makes the sound of "bip" because it's such a short note. If you can picture Bowzer from Sha Na Na going "Yip Yip Yip Yip Yip", you've got the idea. The exercise is designed to encourage strict alternation of the picking fingers (almost always the right hand unless you're playing southpaw), and to develop speed with the same hand. It's also very useful in creating quick "staccato" notes. :)

i once visited Poland, and we drank a lot of Pivo (beer),
some brands i remember were.. and forgive my spelling..
all were macros i would assume
zwywiek - 2nd fav
lech
warka
warka strong
lomza - my fav
eb

i enjoyed the large bottles and fellowship with many polish people, while getting highly intoxicated all the while, I was there for a month and a half, my band played at the Blue Note jazz club in Poznan.. one cool thing though was that all the bars were like "sponsored" by a beer label or something. literally the name of the bar was quite often the name of a beer and they only served that particular beer. it would be like walking into bar "budweiser" and then unfortunately drinking budweiser, although i dont know why so many people would do that, but they do... why dont we burn that place to the ground? my favorite was lomza with a bag of bar-b-q potato chips (my lunch everyday)...

We can get Zywick (sp) here in the states or at least we used to be able to. Have not had it in a long while.

Many of the pubs in the UK are owned by breweries and thus serve those brewers beers on cask. (And that is not necessarily a bad thing.)I look for Free Houses which can serve what ever they want.

Yes! I thought we had this exchange once before but yes - I am a fiddler. I was in a band for 12 years - it was a blessing. We never searched for gigs, etc. They came to us and it was a great ride. I still play and teach - it's "Da Bomb"!

I played fretless bass for a group called Wind Machine in the '90s. Still play fretless with the Dave Beegle Acoustic Band and Tim Hanauer, fretted with the Jurrasicasters, Fourth Estate, GasHead and Moment's Notice, and string bass with the Jennifer Lane Rock 'n' Soul Duo and Gourmet East. Teach about 30 students a week, and do a fair amount of studio work as well. It's a living. :)

To re-open this thread...I picked up a bottle of Niksicko Pivo today, and am drinking it as I type.

Very nice light golden color, quickly diminishing head which leaves a small ring around the edge of my glass. Many threads of tiny bubbles rising from the bottom.
Aroma is of bready malt with a nice hop balance. The taste is similar; like many good pilseners, it is what is not there that is important, ie...very clean malt with just a nice bite from the hops...some saaz?
The drink by date is 4/15/05 so it is a bit old, but not bad.
There is no "skunkiness" or any other flavors to suggest it is not at it's prime.
All in all, a very clean, crisp beer...what BMC wishes it were.
I will drink this one again.

Cheers!

For some it's odd, for some awful and for some, wonderful. Hence the term: "To each his own"! As I'm sure you already know, it's one of the oldest forms of Ale made, along with herbal brews. Did it make you pucker? Just curious, hehe.

Hey all, I hope we're all well here! As you may or may not know, French is my first language and I'm French-born. I've been to many a Belgian Fest and have first-hand experience with the Belgian accent. Geuze is a weird one: the best way to describe the pronunciation is to think first of the u sound in the word PUSH for the middle vowels in the word. Start with a G, add the u (as in push) and finish with a Z.

I know, I'm weird, but Beer weird, LOL.

By the way, Geuze and Lambic, (pr: Lahm-beek) rule and all should try them at least once!

Belgian is such a funny language! Some people pronouce it MEED THE ZHEUZ (U like in push) and some MEED the GEUze, u like in push for the middle vowels.

By the way, what's your opinion of Mead the Geuze?

Nothing sick about Niksicko Pivo...it is named after the city in which it is brewed - Niksic. A very fine brew along with others from the former Yugoslavia. I would stay away from Karlovacko (Croatian) which doesn't offer a whole lot but if you can find the others, I would pick them up in a heartbreat.

As far as I know, you can only find Union and Lasko (Slovenian) in Cleveland, OH. I've searched and searched and that is the best I could come up with.

I've found Niksicko and others and the Berwyn Fruit Market on Harlem, just south of Cermak in Berwyn (Illinois, of course).

I've found Karlovacko at the same store as well as the Miska Liquors further east on Cermak.

Good luck!
