I'm planning a motorcycle trip starting in South Bend, Indiana, going through Toronto, Montreal, then down through New England, across New York, Penn. and back to Indiana. I would like to hit as many micros on my trip as possible. I'm also looking for riders to accompany me on some or all of this trip. If anyone is interested, please let me know.
This trip will be the second week in august, I believe the 8th through the 15th.

Besides being extraordinarily scenic Maine has some very good breweries too.

Yes, Maine has a plethora of good beer and scenery. If you're looking for "bang for your buck" hit up Portland for a good selection of breweries, brewpubs and good beer bars (gotta hit the Great Lost Bear) within a relatively small city. Check this out for an idea of what's in town:
http://www.beeradvocate.com/beerfly/list?path=%2Fbeerfly%2Flist&sort=name&name=&city=portland&s_id=ME&c_id=&zip=&area=&submit=+search+&brewery=Y&brewpub=Y&bar=Y
Also, if your plans take you south of Boston and near RI, give me a yell (or message me) and I can help you out. A few places other than Boston I think are worth seeing:
Portsmouth, NH: Smuttynose, Redhook (big, but impressive facility), Portsmouth Brewery (brewpub), plenty of beer bars (Coat of Arms, Barely Pub in Dover)
Merrimack Valley, MA (Haverhill & Lowell) - The Tap Brewpub (awesome!), Concord Brewers at the Brewery Exchange (pints before walking across the street to catch a minor league baseball game), Mercury Brewing (brewers of Ipswich Ales)
Hylands Orchard and Brewery (Sturbridge, MA) - farm brewery that has a few events going on during mid-August with live music, BBQ, fresh produce and most importantly...fresh beer.
I could go on and on - if you need more info feel free to message me. I don't ride, or I might join you. Enjoy!
Cheers!

Well, I'm bypassing the Canadian portion of the trip this time. I'm going to spend the week "hopping" around New England. Any other suggestions would be appreciated, especially if anyone wants to hook up for a pint.

I've added a numbering system to give my opinion on these.
0 = Never Been/No Opinion
1 = Recommended
2 = OK/Rec w/ Reservations
3 = Could be skipped if needed (But these are NOT bad, just make the cut list if time were an issue)
There are a couple "0"'s that I've heard are pretty bad,
like the 2 that are north of Syracuse, but I'd refrain from
dissing since I haven't been myself.
There are also a couple more that I'd think about including,
such as
Davidson Bros in Glens Falls NY
Middle Ages (Brewery) in Syracuse
(then go to Dinosaur Bar-B-Q for food and an ApeHanger)
Keegan Ales (Brewery) in Kingston, NY (Near Guilded Otter,
but limited open. Call tho, Tom's nice and Mother's Milk Stout is Awesome)
...I could go on.
Too bad you weren't just a little more south, I'd meet up.
Maybe if you're at the Guilded Otter at the right time, I'd take a drive up)

Man Bruno, you plan on covering a LOT of ground, huh?
I'm gonna skip rating VT, NH, RI and CT.
Mostly because I haven't been to that many in these states (except RI -- I've been to all three, but I think newportstorm can rate those better since it's his home state). But the ones I've been to that I have thoughts on:
VT:
McNeill's Brewery --AWESOME beer -- 3 beer engines, mostly English-style ales. This guy knows how to brew. Kinda funky public house feel. Don't bother with food there. But the beer rocks.
Latchis Grille And Windham Brewery -- I don't think they're currently brewing.
Not on your list -- In Wilmington (1/2 west of Brattleboro on rt 9) Maple Leaf Malt and Brewing -- Changes are happenning there and they might not be open. New owner/brewer. I stopped in a couple weeks ago and the Californication Common was great.
In Bennington -- Madison Brewing -- If you stumble across this, keep going!
NH:
Only place I've been to in NH is Portsmouth, and that was years ago. But this is a sister brewery to Smuttynose, which ROCKS! Also in Portsmouth is the Smuttynose production brewery and Red Hook (which I think has a public house that might not be too bad, and a decent tour, from what I've heard)
Man, I've gotta get up to VT and NH -- I'm missing out on a lot of beer!
CT:
Only one on this list I've been to is City Steam -- I had an excellent time here. We went to Hartford for an overnight trip to go to Mark Twain's house, took a riverboat ride, and brewhunt. Pretty good beers, fun time.
I've heard really great things about Willimantic. It's just far enough off the beaten path that we haven't taken the detour yet. One of these times.
John Harvard's is a mini chain with locations in MA, NY and PA, too. The Union Station in RI is part of the chain, also. I've been there and to other JH's and have always found them to be decent to very good.

I guess, after reviewing the ME list, I shoulda included it in the last post! I've been to more in Maine, but it seems they're either further northeast, or gone. It's also been at least 2 years since I've been to any in Maine, so take my comments with a grain of salt . Of your list, I've been to:
Gritty's Portland (they also have a location in Freeport). Real local pub feel. I liked their beer alot. Cool place. Average pub food.
Sebago Portland (not the one you've listed. I think they have 3 locations). More upscale, but I enjoyed it. Decent array of beers that went from mediocre to very good.
Federal Jacks (sister to Shipyard/Pugsley Brewing in Portland, which has a decent tour, blocks from Gritty's and Sebago). Some people don't like breweries that use Ringwood as their house strain. I like it, hence, I like these products. The brewpub beers are better than the bottled product, but they are good representatives of English style ales. Try the Old Thumper.
Not on the list:
Great Lost Bear in Portland. Not a brewpub, but a great beer bar with a nice selection of Maine and New England Micros on tap.

Again, this depends upon you're route through the state (though it looks like you're staying to the east), but I'd defer to newportstorm on this. I've been to Western Mass brewpubs recently, and Boston area ones not as recent, but here's what I'd have to say to help narrow.
Things on the Cape will probably be impractical. Summertime traffic and all. Also, from what I hear, the only things worthwhile in that direction are on Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard -- see: impractical, above. Maybe Buzzard's Bay in Westport (production brewery and adjacent vineyard) would be a reasonable stop.
In Beantown, either of the Boston Beer Works (sister pub in Salem) would be a good stop. If the Sox are home, avoid the Fenway location.
Cambridge Brewing is also a definite worthwhile stop, IMO. Great brewer doing good stuff there. Decent food, too.
There are also John Harvards and a Rock Bottom there. A couple of good beer bars, too. (I tend to concentrate on brewpubs, too, when travelling to a new area, so I don't have info on these).
Harpoon's got a production brewery to, that'd be the better tour than Sam Adams, unless you feel it's a mecca to visit. (Harpoon's also got a brewery in Windsor, VT - near Jasper Murdocks).
AFA the Boston suburbs, again, newport can help. I've heard good things about a couple of places around there...
Hope I've helped!

As far as RI goes, if you're in the state on Friday night, stop by Coastal Extreme Brewing (brewers of Newport Storm) for the free Friday night tour - includes 3-4 pints. Get there early (5:15) so you don't get left out in the cold (heat) as it fills up to its 75 person max quickly.
For brewpubs:
-Coddington has the best beer, imo. Nothing to really blow your socks off, but quality brew. Biggest complaint is serving it too cold.
-Trinity is wildly inconsistent - hit or miss. Their Impy Stout is very good and the IPA is usually nice. Seasonals and specials can range from good to horrid (they seem to have a mineral-rich water problem). The building has character and food isn't bad.
-Union Station - part of the John Harvard's chain. Very blah beer in my experience. Their cask Porter was the only thing worth returning for. They have a new brewer so maybe things will turn around...
-Buzzards Bay in Westport, MA isn't too far from RI and they have a tasting room with growlers to go. No pub, but a rural farm location so you can grab a growler and go find yourself a shady tree to relax under. Also have a sister winery next door.
In New Hampshire:
-I posted a lot about NH in a thread not too long ago:
http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4204
Same with Maine:
http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=3627
I'd stick to Portland if you want to conserve time and hit many spots in a small area.
Massachusetts is overflowing with good beer spots. I have some favorites that may or may not fit in with your travel plans. Boston is ideal as you can park and ride the T to many brewpubs and beer bars. There are some gems in suburbs and even rural western Mass - drop a line if you have a route planned. For some on the outskirts, I gotta give big ups to:
-The Tap in Haverhill, MA
-Concord Brewery at the Brewery Exchange in Lowell, MA
-The Horseshoe Pub in Hudson, MA
-The Moan and Dove in Amherst, MA (?)
Lots to choose from. Feel free to drop a line if you're in the area, though I'll be rafting in Maine Aug 14-16. Enjoy!

I did this in April, and took the advice to get there early. It payed off, and was a fun (if cramped) time. Definitely worth it if you're there!
newportstorm: I knew I could count on you to fill in the gaps! :D
Has Union Station gone through a couple of brewers in the past couple/few years? When I was there, (don't remember the exact year) I thought it was pretty good. We also had an awesome server and were there after the Nov. Brewfest, so that may have "clouded" my recollection.

Must have. I just read in Yankee Brew News that they hired a new brewer to take over for the interim brewer that was running things since the last brewer left. Follow that? So yeah, a few brewers at least.
Their beer wasn't horrible. Just 'blah' to me. I was there with a couple of people from BA and we all agreed about most of the beers. The only two worth a full pint were the Golden Spike and cask Porter. The others were kinda muddy and muted with just a vague bitterness - though they were served too cold. I do like the atmosphere with the patio seating to watch the "posers" hob-nob over at the chic Capital Grille. I'd go back just to sit outside with a cask Porter. I just can't rave about it to an out-of-towner. I have a reputation to uphold. ;)
Cheers!

Yes, I'll be staying at Lake Moxie and rafting the Dead River - did the Kennebec last year. I didn't get over to the brewery last year - stopped at the Great Lost Bear in Portland on the way up. May not this year, either, as it's my wife's birthday. Will try to pick up some of their Magic Hole IPA in bottles, though.
Cheers!

Have a great trip. I'm taking off tomorrow for a week or so at the beach. I'll have my laptop there so I can stay in touch with my office but more importantly check out this board. I just did a very nerdy, geeky thing. I ordered a metal detector. It'll be fun on the beach and since I live in the midst of many Civil War battlefields (Literally next to Manassas Battlefield) and also near colonial farms and sites I might have fun relic hunting. Tell me I'm not a total geek. I mean I'm obsessed with good beer and now buying a metal detector?!

Yeah, that's the narrowed list, there were literally hundreds to choose from.
I figure if I come back home with any less than 2500 miles on the trip, I havn't done my job.

That is an impressive trip. My best was 24 brewpubs in 10 days. Most were in California. That trip was back in 1990 maybe.

Ok, Here is the route.
Heading from South Bend, Indiana straight to buffalo, ny.
Buffalo to Rochester
Rochester to Syracuse
Syracuse to Albany
Albany north through Lake George and Lake Placid
Lake Placid straight over to Portland, Maine
Portland down the coast through Mass., Rhode Island,
then east to Hartford, Ct
Hartford to Corning, Ny
Corning back to South Bend.
Whew! This is going to be rough. Only 7 days.

Well, I just got home this morning.
7.5 days
2578 miles
12 brewpubs
2 beer bars
and 1 brewery
Whew! What a wirlwind. Right now I'm relaxing at home enjoying some homebrew. I took notes on everything, so as soon as I get it finalized, I'll post about the whole trip.
Thanks again to everyone who helped in the planning, and especially to wortchillergoal who was a wonderful host in Syracuse.
