My wife threw a gallon of milk into the fridge right on top of my pack of Wyeast 1084 Irish Ale yeast and it seems to have broken. I found it about 10 minutes ago and she got back from the store at about 12:30 pm so it sat broken in the fridge for about three hours. Okay here's the questions, if I wasn't planning on brewing until Thursday will they survive in the pack at room temp. for that long, more importantly do you think they survived the three hours in a 34 degree fridge or should I just err on the safe side and buy a new pack?

Was the outside of the container broken so that the yeast camr in contact with air or did the nutrient pack just break? If it was just the nutrient pack, what you break when you smack, I would think it will be ok.

I would just pull it out of the fidge like I normally do to get it to swell.

If the conatiner(bag) broke so air could get in, I would toss it.

Yeah, if you're gonna brew Thursday and the outer foil pack is still intact, take it out of the fridge this evening and let it swell. All will be well. And don't forget to give the wife a good beating <wink>.

just for everybody's FYI, I'm going to link to a post in another forum. Look for the second Chris Farley post in the below link, it says a lot about Wyeast smack packs. FYI, he's the owner of Northern Brewer, so he's as reputable a source as one can get...

ps, I have an inflated smack pack in my basement refrigerator that's been smacked and fully inflated for four weeks now, and before that, it sat unsmacked for almost two years. I've never had a problem with Wyeast, they are my yeast of choice...

I'm going to have to try that trick.
I have always found those things to be PIA to get smacked.
I can try for 15 min. before the damn thing pops.

I thought I was the only one to find smacking them bloody difficult: it's like trying to persuade an eel to cut your fingernails for you whilst you're both swimming around in axle grease...
