Rose Street, Covent Garden - The Oldeft Tavern in Covent Garden - Licensed in the Reign of Elizabeth I.

A true tale of our board spreading far and away, and coming full-circle. 11 days ago I learned, last minute, that my boss and his wife were taking a trip to Wales in order to bring his mother-in-law back to the country of her birth to celebrate her 80th.

In said last minute, the boss says, "We'll be spending half the trip in London (sorry Richard, I was gonna have you meet up with him, but he didn't have a set schedule of events), what should I be drinking over there?" Heh, heh, heh.

Well, he stops into the above pub, my hastily scrawled list of good real ales to ask for (in indelible pen) - and the instruction to look for the tap-handle medalions of the beer engines. He walks up to the publican and says, "I'm looking for these," the publican being quite impressed that someone from the U.S. had actually sent him on a hunt for good beer!

The Lamb and Flag being a Young's pub, my boss was in good hands with the publican and his ale suggestions.

There you go Richard, the crusade continues - from London to Chicago and back again to London!

Cheers,
Steve

All Young's pubs are good and the Lamb and Flag is one of the best. I am sure your boss will have enjoyed himself.

Incidentally, I have now fixed my next trip to the USA. I will be over from 19 November to 01 December. My base is Orlando but I am hoping to be able to get around to some other parts as well.

So you're going to Florida instead of the United States? ;)

If you're ever up Washington, DC way you'd be well taken care of by Theakston, Chazwicke, and myself. By well taken care of I mean beaten and robbed.

But there'd be some good beer drunk.

Florida's where I have to go since that's where the ABTA convention happens to be!

I have been there several times previously and, I confess, it's not my favourite State. However, I have determined that there are some decent breweries there now and so maybe I'll get to drink some good beer.

You bet! I owe Richard a few.

Here is a link to the Lamb and Flag:

I looked it up to see if it looked familiar. I've been in several pubs around Covent Garden.

They've got the beers wrong, I see. Scottish Courage? Yukk!

The boss said that L&F also had Fuller's...though the tap medallion was reversed on the evening he visited. :(

I have been to the Lamb and Flag and enjoyed it immensely. It was Highly recommended by CAMRA'S Good Beer Guide, 1999 edition. As I recall, I had a pint of Marston's Pedigree that was quite delicious. I would love to get back to England.

Well there is no better time than August 3-7. The GBBF! I have not made a final decision as to whether I will be there yet. My 17 year old son wants to accompany me and he will want to sight see. I will want to attend all sessions as I did last year.

Indeed, that would be a nice birthday present to myself, but, unfortunately, I don't think my about-to-give-birth wife would like it. :(

There's always next year, though...
