I bought my ingredients for an imperial stout Last Friday. Its and all grain recipe. I dont have a grain mill so I had the guys at the shop crack the grain for me. I know thaty you are supposed to use the grains within a day of getting cracked. Its now Monday and I have no idea when I will be able to brew. Any thoughts on an easy way to store these grains? Perhaps a plastic garbage bag? and for how long do you think I could do this? Perhaps I should just cut my losses and buy the grains again when I am ready to brew, grains are typically the inexpensive part of a batch, but because it is an imperial stout there is a lot of them. Thoughts?

Thanks

This is what I have been told by my local shop. As long as you can store it in a cool dry place, crushed grain can be stored for up to a week. I don't always get to brew the day I purchase my ingredients and have done this with no problems.

I don't recommend buying new grains. I made a very excellent Bass Ale clone with very old grains (I'd be embarrassed to tell you how old). They were stored in a plastic bag with a standard twist tie.

Sample them, taste and smell. I would much rather use fresh grains but I think it is something you can get away with. My current suppplier vaccum seals and I then put those in a sealed tupperware storage unit.

Maybe once I figure out what all these grains do and narrow in on some favorites I'll start crushing my own. Or maybe when my store charges for crushing.
