Disclaimer: This is my first attempt at a tasting note for beers after years of writing hundreds of TN's for wine. I'm in the wine retail business by trade but expansion of our retail presence has allowed a small focus on beer.......hopefully this note (and future ones) make some sense!

Very dark brown, tending to black in the glass. Nice head formed on pouring but dissapated quickly. Fairly subdued nose with some roasted coffee notes. The mouthful was a slight letdown, a low fizz feel with some quite bitter notes - not the toffee, coffee notes I was perhaps looking for. Tough to pick a defining flavour component.

Not a bad drink but at the price (A$3.30) I think I'd prefer the Cascade Special Stout or the Coopers Special Old Stout.

cheers

Welcome to the board. Thanks for the tasting notes. I think Coopers makes some very good beers. Not a lot of Australian beers make it to the States. Do they still make Tooth's Sheaf Stout?

G'day,

I agree wholeheartedly on the Coopers. Whilst they are essentially a mainstream / high production beer I think they produce a range of styles that contain a great deal of interest and character, and perhaps best represented by the Sparkling Ale and the Premium Ale.

Don't know about the Tooth's.....sounds well before my time.

I had a couple Mountain Goat Pale Ales not long ago, and it was dependent on how the bottle was storeed in the fridge as to how it tasted. The first one was quite bitter, but it had been in the chiller on its side. I found out after reading the label on this first one taht they should be stored upright as they are bottle conditioned, and so the second one I had after it sat upright for a week. Much smoother! So I took to storing all bottle-conditioned brews (like any of the Cooper's line) upright.
