At work this afternoon, they brought in some kegs for a party (we hit a big milestone on time on our current project). I walked over to the bar, and first I saw a bunch of plastic cups with the MGD logo on them and on one of the tap handles. Then, I looked at the other tap and my face lit up because there was a Mirror Pond Pale Ale Tap Handle staring me in the face. Behind the beer tender was another untapped keg with DESCHUTES in big bold letters across the top. I was psyched. MP in bottles is a staple for me when I run out of home brew, and it certainly was a no brainer which beer I was going to pick out of those two.
However, I was EXTREMELY disappointed. The beer tasted like someone squeezed lemon juice in it. Not just one lemon, probably 2 or 3. On top of that, it was over carbonated, very prickly on my tongue. I couldn't smell and could barely taste the Cascade hops that I know and love. Missing too was the caramel malt taste. I know Cascade is a citrusy hop, but this was so overpowering that I threw the first glass away after forcing down a quarter of it, grabbed a second cup figuring it was a fluke but threw that away too after 3 sips.
I was so dejected that I went back to my office, finished up some work, and went home a half hour later. No, I didn't settle for the MGD.
So, can anyone explain why a keg of MP might taste so lemony?
