No, you can't use the sankey for half barrels. The cornys use a small adapter that you can get for five bucks. You need one for the CO2 inlet, and one for the beer outlet. You can attach a hose to the outlet with a picnic faucet on the end, and you're done. Look at www.nbrewer.com and look under draft equipment

What is the name of the adaptor?I'm guessing that there are different ones for the pin and ball lock cornies,is this correct?

They are called Disconnects, and you can find them under "Draft Beer Equipment" at Northern Brewer. Yes, there are Ball and Pin locks for corny style kegs, and the disconnects are available for both styles.
Here is a "cut and paste" from their site........

They use separte connectors for the air line and the beer line. With a sankey the air line usually goes in the side of the couple and the beer comes out of the top. You will need to cut those lines and hook up a quick disconnect (http://www.kegworks.com/shoppingcart/customer/home.php?cat=414) found towards the bottom of this page.
There are also places that sell coornies that have a sankey coupler hook up they can be found here. (http://www.kegs.com/newkegsales.html)
Or you can get a kit to allow you to switch between kegs like this one. (http://www.kegworks.com/shoppingcart/customer/product.php?productid=16667&cat=416&page=1)
Hope this helps.

Do i need the barbed or mfl disconnects?

This is just personal preference...barb connectors fit into the hose and are secured by a worm clamp. MFL require an attachment that goes into the tube and allows you to screw on the disconnect, thus making it easier to take apart and clean. If you order the MFL make sure you order a barbed swivel nut or you won’t be able to attach the tubing to the disconnect.
I have both on my system.
